  • Bible Translation Suggestions

I've never really been in the market for a Bible, but I've gotten into a lot of Theological discussions recently, and I think this summer I'd like to sit down and plow through the big black book.

Can anyone recommend some good translations / versions of the bible? I'd like to get as little old english as possible, without losing the whole biblical feel.

    Thanks in advance

IIRC the King James Bible is pretty much the standard edition for many Protestants. I'm not sure which edition us Catholics use, but I'm sure it's some Vatican certified Greek to Latin to English translation.

If you're looking for a short undergrad friendly book on theological analysis, pick up Ninian Smart's "Worldviews". It's appx 130 pages. A bit dry, but it's a good book if you want to get aquainted with (for lack of a better term) Comparative Theology.
If you look around and think everyone else is an *******, you're the *******.

Last I heard, they didn't speak English 2000 years ago. The King James version is just as much of a translation as anything else you're bound to find.

http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/ works for me, but I've never really needed a dead tree version.

I read the entire bible when I was 12, for some inane reason I can't quite remember. I wouldn't waste your time reading it. Just rent the videos of major bible stories.

Translate it into English by turning over the first page
with the 10 commandments and ripping out the rest of
            it.

Page 1 is all you really need, isn't it?

the kind james version is horrible. the changed wording just so they could rhyme it or make it sound more poetical. it's also based off of newer parchment (i.e. not the dead sea scrolls).
however, i might add that accuracy in general is a pretty superfluous. i'd check with your local affliation and see what they use since different bibls accentuate the different points that they want to make.

                UberKruX:

The one that I use is the NIV, or the New International Version. This translation is the one my pastor uses because he feels the translation is best.

The King James Version might be a beautiful peace of art, but can you understand Shakespeare as well as you can understand modern English? For this reason alone, I'd recommend not going with the KJV.

                BC, and ozz.

Why don't you try to help the man with an honest question?

Check out the NIV, and if you don't like it I can look into other widely used translations.

Why not just learn Hebrew, Aramaic and Koine (Common Greek).

Then you won't be at anyone's mercy.

For an english speaker there is nothing better than the NIV.
That is what you should buy.

Beware of the New World Translation, do not even touch it.

I teach Sunday School and also Discipleship Training.

I use the New International Version as this is very understandable.

I would also reccommend using a dictionary and a good Concordance, maybe Strongs.

I also sincerely hope what you read saturates your heart.

Deep Theological understanding is great and something we should all inspire to have, but childlike faith is what you need, simply trusting that God's Inspired word is infallible

Have a great Evening and If I may offer any further assistance I am at your disposal

                      Peace

For this purpose a book bible seems much more appropriate.

obiwan18 - Quite possibly, but you can sample the different versions on line & see which one works best for you.

The New American Bible is what US Catholics use. It is a direct translation from Greek/Hebrew to English. It is longer than prot bibles too.
