Is the U.S. better or worse than it was 50 years ago?
Joseph, I used to ride my bike downtown to see a movie or shop. I would just park it in front of the store or theater. Very few kids, if any, locked their bikes. There was no theft.

Yes I use to hitchhike into Modesto to buy a TV guide and one day made it in 45 min to and from (about 8 miles one way). We did not have a car most of time. Did not have TV until Nov of 58.
Leave a house unlock. Leave your car unlock. About 50% of the kids still live in the country.
I'm from a small town- used to have that growing up, but not so much anymore.
BTW- this is very much a part of 'social' life.
Glad to see someone post personal experience. Like I said, none of us really know what we're talking about.
Peace, joseph. Maybe we'll see times like this again.

I am almost as old as Joseph and I agree with him. The society in general was more honest and safe. There was also more mutual respect for neighbors. I grew up in California so I saw very little racism but I must say that there was not the hatred that there is now between various groups of people. Of course the nation has always been plagued by bigots and that has not changed over the years.
We could leave our house unlocked in Batavia, IL up to the day we moved out, in 1988. When my Mom moved to Winfield, we kept the door there unlocked also, that was until the early 1990s. I know people here who keep their door unlocked.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
I have no idea why being able to have your doors unlocked while you sleep automatically is superior to any culture where people decide to lock their doors.
I'd no sooner go back to 1950 than I would 1980. Unless I had my current memories.
Even when I lived in the countryside I used to lock the doors. Leaving them unlocked is just so....wrong.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

One word- trust.
If you are able to keep your doors unlocked, this is a symbol of the trust that you share with your neighbours.
