Chirac Says Eastern Europeans Are "Infantile" and should shut up!
Well, when their economy isn't growing, that's a pretty huge amount.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Careful, careful, little man.

Unrestricted access to Euro markets is probably more valuable to them than anything you could offer...
Now top that off with how much the EU shells out in direct cash...
Wouldn't bet on it, Frogger. The USA's economy is vast and fully integrated (contrast this with the EU's economy which is vast and still integrating). Open access to a big market is open access to a big market, and if they're gonna be asked to make a choice, we could certainly provide them with a viable alternative.

Why would anyone want to join the EU so that they can be dictated to by France? What Chirac did was ominous. He may be a little more open about his attitude than many would desire; but he seems to reflect a French attitude that France (and its German partner) is the leader of Europe.
Actually, paiktis has said this many time here in this forum as well - France and Germany are the heart of the EU.
What I expect out of this is a heart to heart talk among European countries about democracy.
"Open access to a big market is open access to a big market, and if they're gonna be asked to make a choice, we could certainly provide them with a viable alternative."
You can't. First the EU is way more integrated than NAFTA, and the US is very unlikely to offer more than NAFTA. Second, geography means that the US share of their trade will be 5-10 %, while that of the EU is about 50 % and will likely increase.
That's less realistic than the EU offering Mexico a trade agreement as an alternative to NAFTA.

And I wonder when some Americains here can give up their addiction to France. It's getting pathologic.

Just a pastime to keep us occupied until the war comes on CNN. Sort of like previews at the movies.

I'll count CNN's coverage as an atrocity in its own right.
“Now we declare… that the law-making power or the first and real effective source of law is the people or the body of citizens or the prevailing part of the people according to its election or its will expressed in general convention by vote, commanding or deciding that something be done or omitted in regard to human civil acts under penalty or temporal punishment….” (Marsilius of Padua, „Defensor Pacis“, AD 1324)
HO - Your estimate is insane! LOL....These new little Eastern European nations could never *hope* to have access to that kind of marketshare. Probably, it'd be on par with the figures you listed for the US. And with 25 member states, each of those little members will be nigh on insignificant. France has already demonstrated what life for them will be like IF they're allowed in the club. Gotta be subservient to the man...::shakes head::
On this side of the pond, we might not like it when people disagree with us, but at least we're open to the discussion (again, we're not against complaints when accomplanied by viable alternatvies....never have been....it's just that Europe seems to have left that second part off).
Could it be that Eastern Europe is drawn by the contrast of the US's action vs. Europe's sitting with its thumb up its arse? Paralyzed by divisions on this issue? The recognition that if you want results, then those results must be preceeded by action?

Would you suggest that we watch Faux News instead?

I said the "US share of their trade will be 5-10 %". That's what it is at the moment. EU 50 %. I have no idea what you mean. That their share of EU trade will be 50 %? That's not what I said.

Not much worse. The good thing about Fox is that it does not pretend to be a serious news channel.
Yep....and the sun would never set on the British Empire.
Keep tellin' yourself stuff like that, Paiktis....
HO - yep...misread you. Apologies there. I still, however, disagree. IF we put our minds to it and set about creating a Transatlantic Union with the ones that Chirac throws back, my guess is we could make it work.
Of course, it won't come to that....nonetheless, someone should maybe remind France that it's empire is....gone?
