  • Does your country have an immigration problem?

I read a report recently which suggested that New Zealanders of European descent will be a minority in 50 years, and Maori will be all but assimilated. The new majority race will be the Asians.

This is rather scary... but our government (being all fair and unbiased ) has slapped an English test, which is hard to even those who are native-english speakers, on all new immigrants.

So, regardless of whether you're English, Dutch, Canadian, American or Somalian, you have to take an English test.

So, do your countries have a sizeable problem with immigration?

Yes, we have an immigration problem. It's too hard for people to come to the US.

That would be a big yes. There are far to many people entering illegally and we have no control over our borders.

In New Zealand... I know a few case of Chinese coming over, dumping their kids at an adoption centre and going back to China so they can fill up their "child allowance" again

In the US, it depends who you talk to.

Some think that everyone has the right to enter the US illegaly while other (like me) think that's not right.

New Zealand clearly has an immigration policies. But I doubt the politicians will do the right thing by kicking out all of them white immigrants.

Not really. We could absorb a bit more fairly easily, despite having what appears to be the highest immigration rate in the developed world.

                I'm not really sure.

On one hand, I don't think we let enough qualified people in.

On the other hand, speaking of my city in particular, there's a very rapidly rising problem of "Asian Gangs" which warranted the formation of a 25-cop anti-gang taskforce this month. Recently we've been getting things such as driveby shootings, murders, stabbings, and large drug busts and all have been linked to Asian gangs.

Is this immigration's problem? Maybe, maybe not. It is kinda a weird coincidence, though...

                  Define "problem".

No flame. But remember that every immigrant population that's ever moved here has given some problems with gangs.

                    Italians, Jews, Arabs, Irish...

Comes from being clannish at first (you stick to what you know). Recent immigrants don't trust the cops, try to solve their problems themselves and a lot of the time bring an attitude of acceptance for a powerful underworld from where they originate.

It's not a serious problem, and IMO is minor compared to the positive aspects of an open immigration policy (both goodwill in the rest of the world and increased talent here).

I remember when I lived in England, an area of the town was covered with Kosovans and Somalians. They all stuck together and you were likely to be attacked if you walked down there. They had 20 stabbings in 6 months, IIRC. Kind of scary, but the police couldn't get any info because they all bonded around eachother and didn't give the police a look in what so ever.

You think its bad with asians in New Zealand? Look at Vancouver.

We have huge immigration in Canada, but the problem is not too little, but not enough. Canada's population growth is so far below replacement, at about 1.4 children per woman, it's not funny.

No. And I live in the southwestern U.S.

You can't say it is a problem. As long as there are jobs, it is not a problem. If there were no jobs they wouldn't immigrate here now would they?
