It's a bit disturbing, that playing cowboys and indians is OK, because the cowboys won. But playing nazis and jews isn't OK, because the nazis lost.

    on both of them.

aaglo, I just call it as I see it. Read the thread on Jews fleeing France. Then we see this story. The racists seem to be everywhere -- but, more than this, they are out in the open now, flaunting their race hatred.

Once upon a time, only the European right was racist. Now it is the left and the center as well. Racism seems in fashion in Europe.

Cowboys and Indians is one thing. Now if it was Custer and the 7th Cav and Indians ... thats something else entirely.

im sorry, think its really funny...just the fact that someone thought it was okay to begin with is laughable, nevermind the execution of the game, the parameters and such.

I don't think they're racist. They're just trying to teach the kids how crazy/evil/stupid the Nazis were.

Maybe not the ideal way to do it, but still pretty harmless.

Nah, we played cowboys and indians too.. (in Finland.. WHY? one might ask) I had all the cowboy gears too. I don't know why, but no one wanted to be indians because they always got killed.
We never played nazis and jews though.. Never heard of that one before.

The most fun game in elementary school was 'who's afraid of the black man', where one got chosen to be the black man, and he had to scream that, and then everyone started running and the 'black man' tried to catch them, and everyone he touched became a black man too, thus chaser

Now that I think of it, it might be interpreted as quite racist game. But we never thought it that way. I think it's called different game now, since there are black kids too in elementary schools..

                      :jawdropsmilie: Stunning...

I can see this kind of game in the Deep South in the 1950's...but...wow...the overt and blatant racism...

                      ...wow.

At least now you understand why it probably wasn't a very nice premise for a game.

                        Don't forget these Finnish candies.

When Mark Wadsworth, board member of the British Anti-Racist Alliance, questioned the "comical" black cartoon characters used by Fazer as being insulting, racist, unfunny and outdated, this made big headlines in Finnish evening newspapers.

Since Wadsworth is also a consultant for the EU in issues of anti-racism, his protest was considered as another example of how the union membership threatens to homogenize Finnish culture, erasing traditional things well loved. "Fazer's liquorish threatened with boycot and Bruessels: 'The image of negro boy is insulting'", and "'Insulting towards the black!' Will EU ban Fazer's liquorish boy?", the tabloids of Ilta Sanomat, Finland's biggest evening paper, cried.

In europe some people are racist. Occasionally they get elected to local authorities or they do stupid things and get exposed in the press. There is a big fuss and they get slapped down or voted out after a while. I would rather that than pretend racism doesn't exist.

DroseDars, I see the problem with this game now, sure.
But we didn't think it that way when we were kids, like the black man is bad or anything. It was just fun to run and have someone to chase you.
Just like cowboys and indians.. plus we don't have that much black people here, and in 80's I think I saw maybe one or two in Helsinki, the capital. I think there's a big difference the game being played in deep south 1950's and in here in elementary school, it didn't mean anything here really. They had to think it over again since now there are black kids and all, so small modifications are done like 'who's afraid of the green man' or so.
Also, I'm not sure if it meant black man as African, but more like black the colour.. Not sure, but we never thought of it as African man, but as black man, since it was pointing straight to the black man (not african) in our language. So I'm not sure if it translates that well to english
Anyway it was a fun game
                            In da butt.

I understand that, Pekka. Kids don't get it, but adults do and they allowed it. Almost certainly it evolved as a reference to Africans, but who originated the game is lost to time...as is their intention.

I don't want to beat the dead horse, so I'll just say I'm glad you've realized the problem with the way that game was played in the past and leave it at that.

BTW I have never played "cowboys and indians" or "smear the queer" even ONCE, nor have I ever seen anyone else play, and I've lived in Reno, Nevada since 1986 (me = 21 now). Has anyone else avoided those games or am I just a lucky freak?
