Catholics less likely than protestants or evangelical protestants to vote Republican?

Shi, this makes no sense to me. Are you including non-practicing Catholics along with practicing?

"Rich blacks vote republican as well: its a matter of class, not race."

I am shocked anyone who had ever called themselves a political scientist would say that. If it's not a matter of race compare how blacks and whites vote controlling for difference in income, education, etc.

"The rich might vote MORE for Republicans, but it doesn't mean they vote Republican over Democrat as a group."

Right, the percentage of votes Democratic Candidates get from rich blacks is a little less then what they get from poor blacks, but they still vote Democratic by big margins.

        "asians/hispanic = republicans."

Asians outside of Hawaii do tend to be Republican, but the Democrats still get a majority of the Hispanic vote most of the time. There are exceptions though, I think Jeb Bush won the Hispanic vote in Florida.

Shi, this makes no sense to me. Are you including non-practicing Catholics along with practicing?"

Yes I am, I am including everyone who identifies themselves as Catholics. Evangelical Protestants often care deeply about social issues and vote based on them(think religious right). As far as practicing vs. non practicing however, it is true in general the more someone attend religious services the more likely they are to vote Republican.

And most rich hispanics still vote dem. Whats the difference? The richer minorities are, the more likely they are to vote republican. Otherwise, they remain loyal democratic voters. Hipanics might not be as loyal as blakcs, but that still does not change the overall equation.

In plenty of elections, black turnout as a percentage is greater than white turnout as a percentage.
And who won those election's, in the states were minority votes are key? (National presidential elections are squewed by the EC)

ja, generally speaking: blacks = democrat asians/hispanic = republicans.

of course there are variances in the groups.

Actually, Nein. Hispanics remain democrats. Look at the sad fate of the California Republican party. As for Asians, I have never seen anyone really care about their vote (at least out here in the East Coast).

Among Hispanics, Gore beat Bush by a 2-to-1 margin.

Hispanics, as a group, tend to favor Dems. Just not as much as Blacks do.

Thank you Shi, practicing Catholics are very similar to Evangelicals in voting patterns.

"I am including everyone who identifies themselves as Catholics."

Sure wish this was a lower percentage, those who call themselves Catholic, yet don't practice.

May I ask why you're making such a fuss about this? After all, what's the difference between voting Republican nad voting Democrat? The country that's going to get bombed next year?

Btw, a Spaniard immigrating in the US is considered white or hispanic?

Just minority votes? In Florida and Texas Republicans swept and carried plenty of Hispanic voters.

I'm wondering if this has more to do with immigration, or their prodigious birthrates.

I seem to recall somewhere that there is a trend for hispanics to gradually blend into the general population. After three or four generations many begin to classify themselves as "white". There may be a sort of upper limit then to the portion of the population classified as hispanic, since those who have lived here for a long time gradually blend in.

The birth rate of hispanics in the US is pretty close to the national average.
