  • Achovies are usually too salty for my taste, but there's nothing wrong with pineapple & canadian bacon...

That said, nothing beats a properly done mushroom pizza.

No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

    • it doesn't seem like very many of us have had chicago pizza except for Pizza Hut Chicago Deep Dish...... How about Ming mails us a frozen chicago pizza so we can judge for ourselves

        • My favorite pizza in Illinois was called Roman Coin pizza, not the best but tasty and very filling for the price.

          • So let me get this (threadjack) straight --
We're arguing with someone from Atlanta about this?

Imran -- Sbarro, the biggest (IIRC) NY-style chain, is a classic example of what we call "good-bad" pizza. Meaning, "pretty good for bad pizza." If you can't get good pizza, it'll do.

My condolences to ixnay and Odin, who live in truly pizza-deprived environments.

And let's remember that all this started because someone asked for the identity of the awesome thin-crust we had at the Chicago Poly meet.

All arguments involving national chains are moot.
All arguments involving timelines and history are moot.
All arguments involving national popularity are moot.

Food is about taste. I know we've got some amazing pizza here in Chicago, and that we had one of many excellent examples of Chicago pizza at Ming's last Friday.

I've had New York pizza (in New York) on numerous occasions. It's different, and not my preference. But I also know that both Chicagoans and New Yorkers will find great comfort in the tastes they grew up with.

This is not an argument that can be settled via vehement online arguments. Nor by invoking statistics (Ming) or cooking shows (Imran). This is like arguing about the cuising in paris vs. provincial French cooking, or northern Italian vs. southern.

The beauty of food is in its variety. Personally, I plan to learn about and love as much of it as I can in this life.

[And let me just say publicly-- in an open thread -- that the Chicago Poly Meet was a blast. Thanks to Ming for hosting, to Rah for the pizza, and to our guests (chegitz guevara, Theben, bunnygrrl, H Tower, and loinburger) for coming out.]

Obviously Ming has no confidence in Chicago style pizzas. NY pizzas then must clearly be the superior ones.

Travolta was eating a BROOKLYN Pizza in SNF, PROVING where it's best!

                  Aay-Oh!

Actually, I like both the same, but my wife makes the best pizza.

Are you auditioning to the Jackass sequel?

The perfect pizza includes: chicken, blue cheese and jalopeños (minimum requirements)...
I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are still missing.

                      • Gotta love Chicago-style pizza. There's even a great stuffed pizza chain in Austin (Mangia's).

Of course, I've lived there for a few years (while have never lived in NYC).

My question is how come any deep dish / stuffed whatever pizza tastes like such crap?
Maybe because pizza places are crappy in Decatur?
