Actually Pizza is Italian. After the unification of Italy, they made a special dish for the (don't remember if it was the PM or the King) in the colors of the Italin flag. Supposedly that was the first Pizza.

As for whether Pizza is better in NY or Chicago, not sure on that one. I really don't know what the difference is between NY and Chicago style Pizza, although Pizza Hut for a while started selling something called "The Big New Yorker" as one of their Pizzas and that was pretty good. But on the whole even though I've been to both cities I had no idea such a pizza controversy existed........

The "first" pizza that you mention is nothing like what is now being served in the US. The Pizza served in the States in not Italian by any stretch...

Ming is just deluded, Shi. He thinks Chicago style 'parlors' can even be in the same sentance as. New York style pizzarias.

Chicago is deep dish crap pizza. New York is regular pizza. You had the Big New Yorker... a large pizza with a medium sized crust. You can get a decent slice at a Sbarro's.

See how deluded he is. He is now claiming Chicago 'parlours' are better than New York pizzarias. Let's let him sink into Alzheimer's by himself .

Now Sbarro's is a really good pizza, and we do have that here. I will have to try a Chicago style pizza for me to judge though.

You can't seriously be arguing whether pizza is originally Italian or not?

New York pizza is horrible. It is too thin!! I have to eat like 20 slices to fill up

Chicago deep dish is alright. Different, but good.

here in Vegas we have Detroit style pizza. I never had it. What is detroit style?

I'm in agreement with Ming, Chicago-style is a thousand times better than that horrid New York rubbish.

Pizza as we know it, bread crust, tomato sauce, and mozzarella is indeed Italian. It was invented in Naples in the 19th Century. A Neopolitan chef created a pizza for the Queen Magarita using tomatos, basil, and Mozzarella, the colors of the Italian flag. This is techincally pizza magarita (he named it after the Queen). Pizza is actually older than this, but what we think of as pizza is this dish.

Pizza was imported to New York at the begining of the 20th Century. The first resteraunt to serve it still exists and still makes the original pizza magarita, as well as other types of pie.

Chicago style pizza, contrary to national opinion, is not deep dish pizza but stuffed pizza. It is a deep dish pie, but it is not a super thick crust like most people around the country believe, and it has a thin layer of crust on top, covered with tomato sauce. The "toppings" go inside (Pizzeria Uno/Due and Gino's East don't add the second crust but the sauce still goes on top).

This style of pizza was invented by the founder of Pizzeria Uno's in the 1940s, after he had pizza in New York during the war. Chicago style pizza is much more intensely falvored than New York or Italian pizza. When a trio of pizza experts from Naples toured the US, they declared that Chicago style pizza was horrible, "like a volcano going off in your mouth." They said New York style pizza was much closer to true pizza, and they were promptly shown the exit to the city and told never to return.

What is important in what they said, however, is that they prefered the blander New York style pizza, and as most Americans know, bland-er is inferior. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Imran. Outside of New York or Chicago, pizza is pretty much crap in this country, so even NYC pie is better than nothing.

Since when is blander worse? Would you rather have 'intense' bread than bland bread? I sure wouldn't. It's why we prefer cheese pizza to anything else! Like you said pizza experts from Naples perfered New York pizza. True pizza .

I eat Brownberry Stone Ground Wheat bread. It's intense. So is rye. So is any good bread compared to white bread. (Actually, I bake my own now because it's cheeper.)
