paiktis, We in the US were told that Serbia was in the process of ethnically cleansing Kosovo - just as the Serbs had done earlier in Croatia and Bosnia.

              Was this information untrue?

Serbians in this forum have stated that they were fighting the KLA and "evicting" illegal aliens.

              What are your views?

It was only the threats of Bush and Blair that pushed Iraq toward even readmitting inspectors, even if half-heartedly.

                      • ned my real views on that matter are these:

_milosevic was a dictator ready to do anything to stay in power
                        _serb generals did ethnic cleansing

_most serbs deceived (or were deceived) in believing that all they were doing was fighting KLA rebels.

_nato had no reason to exist at that time. an invasion and "peace" in serbia was an excellent reason to keep it going then

_bombardement was illegal, didnt solve any problems and created 100s of dead and infrasctructure damage. it was unessecary, the balkan people could solve this by themselves.

_also nato bombardement created a vaccuum of power and huge crime as well as the civil war in fyrom.

_all in all serbs were to blame as were croatians (burn up of serb villages) and kosovars (assassinations of serb villagers)

_the solution reached by greece furom serbia croatia and bosnian albanians was the key but was shortcircuited by bosnian serbs (which we could handle) and NATo for its own benefits as explained.

                        • Thanks paiktis. Your post reflects a "sphere of influence" point of view. You acknowledge the problems that Milosovic and his generals created, but resent NATO interference in a Greek-led Balkan solution.

An analogy would be for NATO to intervene in the Carribean or Central America - areas in America's sphere of influence.

As to "legality," as you can see on this board, there continues to be a lot of debate about whether the UN, let alone, NATO should intervene in civil wars under circumstances of genocide. I think the majority view is that the international community should intervene.

                          • it was not a greek - led solution. greece was just the country that could conveince all the balkan nations to sit on the same table and talk when noone else could. the solution was their own and it is not hard to believe that they did reach a solution when they actually sat down and talked without any other interferecnce or "promises" from abroad.

also the balkans is not in greece shpere of influence except economically.

                            • bosnian serbs didnt abide by it but the balkan nations could handle them. then nato came barging in (for its own benefit) and created misery deaths poverty and more problems for the region, but it served its interests.

                              • bare in mind that milosevic didnt quite. the bombings just stopped. the exodus of albanians started because and after the bombings too. then the war on fyrom started and now kosovo is a vast lawless land when international crime flourishes.
