The sacredness of it is not a practical implication. Most people don't think religious beliefs are sacred. I am a religous person, and regularly go to church, but I still question everything, even if its "sacred".

Maybe I give people too much credit, but I would think people believe religious teachings because it sounds reasonable and desirable, more than because they fear being damned for eternity if they don't believe.

    Pun? Where?!
oh, I think I saw the pun, but I am not sure , and thus won't point out. Plus, it might be offensive in a way , to a certain poster.

Speer: Take offense at what? It was obviously meant as a joke because I was giving one of those tropico speeches thing.... and what I do. I haven't played that game in a while.

Fez isn't the one here advocating the overthrow of democracy and the enslavement of the human race. I apologize, Fez, for being too quick to support mr. Speer. At first, I couldn't fathom why you would name yourself after a F*cking nazi, but it is becoming all to clear to me.

I was just talking about what I would do in a game. I fully respect the rights of those religious and must apologize for my little outburst there a couple of messages ago...

I've met Mr. LaHaye, and I think he's just another warped protestant who would be far better off getting buggered by a priest in his childhood than growing up to actually believe this crap.

Not a threatening guy, but I would not want him in charge of anything either.

                    Che-

I can imagine you running around on the street with a sheet of paper shouting that you have a list of dangerous religious fanatics in high place. The thread is some sort of wierd cross between McCarthy and Chicken Little. You take a popular religious based book, see that the author is involved in the same organization as a handful of political leaders, and conclude that these politicians are going to force us all to live the way that the novel tells us to. I think that you are getting worked up over nothing. In fact, I think that your problem boils down to the fact that you personally don't agree with the book or its message. Let's reverse the situation.

Would you be upset if: an author has written a bestseller based on a vision of the proletariat overthrowing the capitalist system. This author belongs to a liberal organization that includes a handful of politicians.

If this were the case, I doubt that you would be complaining at all. The author and politicians simply have a different ideology than you. That is your problem. If this is why you are complaining, than you are no better than a Communist Jerry Fallwell, closeminded and biased against all belief systems other than his own. The politicians you mentioned don't buy into your beliefs. Deal with it.
"The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is to have with them as little political connection as possible... It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world, so far as we are now at liberty to do it." George Washington- September 19, 1796

It kind of scares me that someone would take the flawed theology presented in the "Left Behind" series this seriously.

Do more than a handful of trailer trash believe the "Left Behind" stuff as literal? No way.

End Times, UFOs, angels, that Edwards dope... they all appeal to our endless desire to be titillated and entertained by pure escapism.

As an atheist who sees that in some real ways Christian (or any faith's) nutbars are a legitimate threat to freedom, I have no problem at all with these kinds of books other than their being exceptionally awful writing.

the pre-millennialist theology found in the Left Behind Series is the prominent view among evangelical Christians
No, not really. Its just that a good chunk of Baptists are premillenialists, most non-Baptist relatively main-stream envangelicals are post-millenialist (ie no rapure) as are quite a few Baptists.

And LaHaye is a really loony, he's the guy who started fundies using "secular humanist" as an insult and got the idea that there's an evil atheist conspiracy responsible for everything that fundies don't like (we wish ) rolling.

And I happen to like Reagan.
Silly creationist You like creationists don't you Gian?

I am tired of your weak arguments with unfounded evidence.
What evidence in the article is unfounded?

The government is the government. They don't hold any views besides governing those who put them there.

There is no proof he is a milleniarian mindset. He is just writing a novel. People do write novels of fanciful things, you know.
LaHaye is definately an hardcore fundamentalist, no doubt about this whatsoever, just look at http://www.timlahaye.com

Actually, he isn't. The writing is horrible, full of technological errors and storyline inconsistancies.

An increase in traditional morals would bring an end to all the drug using, single mothers, etc.
definately, gotta love that traditional morality
                                Genesis 38:24
And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

If you seen me rule tropico, you will come to the conclusion I am probably one of the best leaders in the world. Police and Military abuse runs rampant and I just eliminate anybody who opposes me or even thinks about protesting.
