I would never buy from one of those companies

if I want cheap, I will build my own

if I want sweat, I will have a company like yours do it (or Alienware or GamePC)

        • The NV30 will be shipping from OEMs and on store shelves in October-November.

It's a weird situation. The design's been done for months, but it's being produced on a 0.13 micron transistor process. The company who makes the chips for both ATi and Nvidia is the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Right now all they have fully working is the 0.15 micron transistor process (which is bigger and slower than 0.13).

ATI made their Radeon 9700 on 0.15, Nvidia on 0.13. Even though they were both designed around the same time, ATI will get their card out months in advance due to TSMC having problem with manufacturing the 0.13 cards.

          • I can upgrade a intel 300+ whatever (or Amd equal) to a p4 1.7 for $300.00 Cdn. No biggy get em while you can.

            • But IT CERTAINLY IS NOT FOR ANYBODY WHO DOES ANYTHING MORE THAN THE DEAD AVERAGE, not adequate for gamers, application people, or anything else more than typing, making cheesy graphics and internet surfing (even that has its limitations.

Yeah, who would ever use a Unix-based system for getting anything done ?

                • eh. if i were you, i'd fuggedabout all these guys ranting and raving about which one sucks and what not.

if you really want a computer that you can be happy with, find a friend who has a good mac, and find a friend who has a good windows pc. play around with it, see what you like better. i mean, really, it comes down to what you're more comfortable with. gaming, as you've mentioned, said is not as big of a concern, so. and in terms of productivity, it doesn't really matter, because few people actually require processor-intensive suites like maya4 or what not.

once you pick an os, be it OSX 10.2 or WinXP SP1, it's easier from there.

if you pick a mac: do you plan to upgrade? if no, then maybe one of those pug-fuggly imacs is for you. do you favor looks over performance? maybe a nice barebones mac tower is good. do you favor performance? try a dual processor tower.

if you pick a pc: do you want cutting edge innovation? be prepared to pay a little more, for perhaps maybe alienware or voodoopc or what not. do you want a decent reliable system that's relatively easy to upgrade with good tech support? try dell. do you want pure crap? try any of those bargain types, or gateway.

just... follow your bliss. find what's comfortable, and pick it. screw processing power. it doesn't sound like you'll need it that much.

                    Enjoy.

                    • I've used macs and PC's for years at work and at home and during that time I've switched my opinion about which is better back and forth. For now though, macs are so far behind hardware-wise that the choice is obvious unless you want to throw away your money.

<--- Quote by Former U.S. President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt
"And there will be strange events in the skies--signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. --1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

A Dual 1GHz G4 can't even come CLOSE to match the speed of a SINGLE Pentium 4 2.53GHz. Imagine a dual Pentium 4 2.53GHz Xeon.

The 2.8GHz Pentium 4s come out in 1-2 weeks, also.

And name a single normal user who would need dual anything?

But I do agree, the G4 is based on antiquated architecture and is to be avoided at all costs. And by no means reaches the speed of a Pentium 4. (Damn, even I wouldn't see siding with Intel but here I got no choice)

                            • Did you see those benchmarks, Fez? A single Pentium 4 was about on par with the performance of dual Athlon XPs...

                              • Edit: Now I read those closer... that place must of been bribed by Intel... it was one not two Intel.

Asher shut up please. AMD Althon XP 2000+ is like 1.7Ghz or something... that Pentium was 2.5Ghz or something like that. Actually that was pretty good. It is not like I have sympathy for a company that will be made into garbage (Intel) after AMD releases its new line.
