    Tamerlin - I'm weeping!

    All Blacks 12
    Wallabies 6

    No tries.

Ref did a good job, generally, in terrible wet and windy conditions. Missed a few things.

The ABs played the conditions better than the Wallabies. Mehrtens was terrific, as always. His tactical kicking was outstanding. The Wallabies made way too many handling errors - a lot of them due to AB pressure, some of them due to the conditions. The Wallabies' backs - their strength in the last few games - hardly saw the ball, which spent most of the time being barged up and down the middle of the field. Not a particularly attractive game - thanks to the conditions - but still a typical Bledisloe Cup match. I'm not all that disappointed with the Wallaby effort under the conditions. The ABs were simply better on the night.

PS. Tamerlin - because you backed the ABs (under our margin system of betting), you win!

      Ah !

I,ve never been very lucky with bets but I knew it would be a tight score.

I'am pleased Merthens have made a good game, this is a player I have always liked...

The return match will be tough I guess.

      See you monday.

Rugby - The Beautiful Game: Bank Statement

After tonight's Wallabies -v- All Blacks match, the bank statement reads as follows:

        Caligastia 100-40 = 60 + 47 = 107

        finbar 100-20 = 80

        Andydog 100-20 = 80 + 24 = 104

        LDiCesares 100-10= 90 + 12 = 102

        academia 100-10= 90 + 12 = 102

        Tamerlin 100-30 = 70 + 35 = 105

Anyone spare a dime/penny/franc/peso for a struggling Wallaby supporter?

Late in the second half the ABs had a massive overlap out wide but of course someone threw a bad pass and completely screwed it up.
I think the All Black forwards played a fantastic game, and apart from a few line breaks from the wallabies the whole team played a very aggressive defensive game. The conditions certainly seemed to suit the All Blacks more than the Wallabies, and I think if they had been different the Wallabies probably would have won. The next match will be in sydney where the weather will probably be better, so the Wallabies will definitely have the edge there.

Next week - NZ vs South Africa in Wellington. Should be a cakewalk for NZ.

As for the Bledisloe cup, I dont get these two test series. It always seems like the team to win the second game gets the cup, so doesnt that make the first game essentially meaningless?

It was that sort of night for both teams. I liked John Mitchell's comment after the game (and I'm paraphrasing): "If you want a half decent game of rugby, don't play in the South Island of New Zealand at night". Of course rugby is a winter game, but a team of 15 penguins would probably have scored a couple of tries and won the game last night.

Yeah, the ABs tight 5 were terrific. They - and Mehrtens' tactical kicking - were the difference in the end. Yet the AB lineouts were dismal - I think the Wallabies won at least 4 - and with the amount of overall possession the Wallabies had they should have done better. Trouble is, a lot of our possession was in our own half.

I expect a different result in Sydney next month. Unless Sydney turns into Antarctica

I think next week will be a real case of margin betting. Who wants to put their hand up to calculate the margin? Someone who isn't either a Kiwi or a Bok? Well, we don't have any Boks! So someone who isn't a Kiwi.

As for the Bledisloe cup, I dont get these two test series. It always seems like the team to win the second game gets the cup, so doesnt that make the first game essentially meaningless?
Well, given that a tied series means the holder retains the trophy, it's arguable - subject to results - that even a 3-match series renders first games meaningless.

Say this were a 3-match series. The ABs are now one up with 2 matches to go. If Australia wins one and the other is a draw - Australia retains the trophy. Who was it who said "Lies, damn lies and statistics."?

Ooops! Nearly forgot ... late in the second half, the ABs were as lucky as buggery not to have a penalty try awarded against them.

                    Goooooooooood morning people!

And what a fine morning it is thanks to the boot of Andrew Mehrtens!

It was a bit of a ****ty game, frustrating to watch, but I'll quite happily settle for the result all the same.

... late in the second half, the ABs were as lucky as buggery not to have a penalty try awarded against them.
Naa - it was never certain that the try would have been scored. The ref had an absolute shocker - but that was one decision he did get right. I see Gregan has already started winging about it to the press. There's a surprise.

Late in the second half the ABs had a massive overlap out wide but of course someone threw a bad pass and completely screwed it up.
That was Mark Hammett. It will be interesting to see if Mitchell keeps him in given the shoddy line outs.

It was nice to see Matt Burke stuff up a few fairly straight forward conversions.

Actually that was his grandfather, Phillip.
Was it? I heard it was Harry (I thought he must have been stoned again or something). Funny all the same though. Tell me Finbar, do they have electricity in all parts of Australia yet? Thanks for your 4 gold btw.

Well it looks like you guys have finally got a saffa in the loop

Dreary game yesterday with the conditions making it bloody tough, I am suprised not more players are using the gloves especially with the ball being so slipery. Even with the wallabies training under sprinklers to get used to the wet they still struggled.

I am definitly looking forward to Saturdays game it should be a cracker. The bokke have a few exiting youngsters in, but they will be a bit suspect in defence. Being a true patriot I reckon the bokke should take it.

Well, a win against the Wallabies is, after all, a novelty.

That was nice and depressing. Everyone hates the ball - Mehrtens calls it "a dead pig", but at least he can kick the bastard. How big is Andrew Mehrtens? Anyone know? The power in his field kicking is extraordinary.

Was it? I heard it was Harry (I thought he must have been stoned again or something).
Nuh. Phil the Dill. Yet again.

Only the civilised parts. Which pretty much rules out everywhere except my place.

Thanks for your 4 gold btw.
I'm absolutely sure it will be returned with all the grace with which it was given.

Welcome! Now we've just about got ourselves a full rugby set!

Dreary game yesterday with the conditions making it bloody tough, I am suprised not more players are using the gloves especially with the ball being so slipery. Even with the wallabies training under sprinklers to get used to the wet they still struggled.
Apparently John Mitchell wouldn't let the ABs wear gloves, which is odd. A lot of those players wore them during the S12 season. OTOH, the conditions were so bad that they didn't help the Wallabies' handling all that much.

I am definitly looking forward to Saturdays game it should be a cracker. The bokke have a few exiting youngsters in, but they will be a bit suspect in defence. Being a true patriot I reckon the bokke should take it.
You're playing in Wellington. Slightly further from the South Pole, but not much.

Have you read enough of this thread to have worked out we've got a betting comp going? If you're keen, you are hereby awarded an opening balance of 100 Civ Gold and you can feel free to splurge as little or as much as you choose on next week's game. We bet on margins. It's explained in one of the earlier posts.

The ABs will obviously be considered favourites next week. Sometime this week, we'll determine the margin they will have to win by before a bet on them can collect. Conversely, the Boks will have to finish closer to the ABs than that same margin for a bet on the Boks to collect.

                          Stay tuned.

Welcome Mickeyj, when I found this Rugby thread I was rather surprised no South-African was posting here. With Academia it seems every SH major nation is now represented.

About the next Saturday match, I think the score will be tighter than Finbar, Caligastia and Andydog think. As far as I can remember most of the NZ-SA games in the Tri-nations have been tight ones though I must admit I don't remember last year scores.

On the other hand, the South-Africans don't play at the top level these days and their S12 teams have not been very good (am I wrong ?).

I'am really hesitating on this issue, will we see a short or a large victory of the AB (sorry Mickeyj but I don't think the Springboks will win this game) ?

I will read the articles in the "Midi-Olympique" (our weekly Rugby magazine published every monday) and hear your comments before deciding.
