Wallabies won 38-27, but I had them to win by 15+. They should have, except they did the equivalent of missing a couple of sausage rolls from the goal square.

Edit. Sorry, academia, you backed the Wallabies but they had to win by more than 14 1/2 points for you to win the bet. They only won by 11, so, unfortunately, you lose. Blame Matt Burke and Stirling Mortlock for their shocking kicking.

            • Very nice summary finbar if I may say so.
I too caught the tackle and promptly missed the cause of the real bout of aggro between "Bok #3" (I couldn't make out the number with all the Aussies jumping on him ) and the two offending wallabies.
He was the one dragged away from the rest of the fracas by several Aussies?

I think the Australian team should be counting their lucky stars that they actually won. With < 5mins to go, the Boks behind by only six with a sudden burst of points just under their belts and with possession deep in the Wallaby half it could've come down to a Bok conversion attempt deciding the victor.
Not a bad finish at all - especially given they were down 24-3 after the first half hour.
              Altogether - very entertaining indeed

              • George Gregan's decision to try for the try (so to speak) instead of booting it out of play with 6 seconds to play is also to be applauded loudly, methinks.

He was the one they were after. He'd obviously done something. Steven Larkham never chases someone - for revenge - like he chased that #3.

Quite seriously, I was never bothered. The Boks weren't really threatening in any overall capacity, they were more isolated breakouts.

Terrific finish. Why the Boks don't play rugby from the outset instead of deliberately giving away penalties is beyond me.

Seeing I've found my way in here (wherever 'here' is) I'll add my two cents:

The question is, can they beat the red hot All Blacks? (they dont seem to miss Lomu!)

Well they'll have 80 000 (minus say 20 000 kiwis) cheering them on at Stadium Australia!

I'm not calling it Telstra Stadium

Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home." - Glen Bateman, The Stand (Stephen King)

Steve Larkham guilty of intended retaliation? I'm in shock...I'll need another 24 hours to get my thoughts together on that one.

It did occur to me that Steve will be rising 30 when RWC finishes, and you know we could do wth a capable fly half like that lad...but we can't have a violent player on our (saintly) books can we?

"Intended" is the key! He was chasing and looking like he wanted to deliver punches but wasn't quite sure how to!

He only signed a new contract - I think - last year. I'm not sure how long the contract was for. Probably 3 years. Which would take him to just beyond the WRC. Then, I suspect, he'll be off like a flash. Put your bids in now.

Edit. PS. I just noticed Eddie Butler's book on the Lions tour here last year has received a good review in yesterday's Sydney Morning Herald. I might keep an out for it. Though $23.95 for 217 pages is a bit steep.

                            • Looks like it was a good match, but it is sad the boks seem to be their old selves again (brutes).
A little correction to Tamerlin's French vocabulary:
6 and 7 are both flanker/troisieme ligne aile. I don't know anyone who makes a difference between open and blindside there. 8 is troisieme ligne centre (or numero 8).
The 12 and 13 are sometimes called premier centre and deuxieme centre, though all teams don't play first/second center, some play right/left (I do when I play centre. You run less that way).

Thanks for the corrections LDiCesare (I have already corrected the initial post), it seems I still have a lot to learn about the Noble Game.

Finbar : do you think someone will care to lend us some gold if we keep betting like that ?
