      Exactly my point....

UberKrux - really REALLY harsh words there. The entire purpose of a word like "******" or "Pollack" is to offend an entire group of people. So to say that well some blacks are "******s" and some polish are "pollacks" is not what you really mean. If there are some black people that aren't good, don't call them '******'. If there are some polish people that aren't smart, don't call them 'pollacks'. That's the whole point.

People are people, judge them on an individual basis

Orange, I believe that's Uber's point. You judge them individually and then call them names .

            Orange,

I'm not quite sure what you want people to suggest, though. You claim your acquaintance isn't racist, despite the racist remarks. But then you admit he's a friend of a friend, so you obviously can't know him all that well, right? So how do you know he's just mouthing off, and his intent isn't to be racist?

I mean, if he says those things, I have to take him at his word that he believes them (I don't like to assume people are liars).

i just believe that the words don't specify the whole group of people, but people of the group.

Call them names fine, but don't use racial epithets, unless you're a comedian of the target group.

Well... they are still insulting no matter what you believe... and if you use them again here, you are toast!

It's not your place to judge what words are acceptable to others. If you use racial epthiets, you aren't saying the person is stupid or a screw up and an *******, you're saying they are inferior based on their ethnic/racial/gender identity.

Please enlighten me, why is it offending to call a Pole "Pollack"? Any hidden message in the word?

For example Poles are "polacker" (totally un-offensive) in Sweden.
Yeah, Moe, that team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I've seen teams suck before, but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

It's an insult in English. Poles are supposed to be incredibly stupid, according to the sterotype. That word is what we use when refering to them. Sad, when you think of all the contributions Poles have made to our country (USA).

There are several other people who used those words as well.

While not neccesarily in a racist way, just the USE of the words is bad enough isn't it?
