It just may... now to get Muslims to vote more .

Michigan, it might REALLY have an effect.
    a) What about Michigan?

    b) I was under the impression (given by you, IIRC) that the Muslim vote in the US is mainly Republican. Could this change (i.e. is their money where their mouth is)?

      This reeks of police state.

If the border is to open, patrol it better. Don't profile everyone just for the sake of it.

Profiling is smart, but they are going about it the wrong way. It's ironic that you disagree with Ashcroft, Imran; being the Republican that you are.

Profiling might be smart, but over the long run is politically untenable.

There is no reason why everyone entering the U.S. cannot be fingerprinted. We have the technology.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

That's part of why democracy is a flawed system. Sometimes, doing what's best for the people makes them vote you out.

              a) Because the Detroit area, according to most reports, has the highest percentage Arab population anywhere in the world, outside of the Middle East. However, a high percentage of them are actually Christian.

              b) The Arabic groups in the area did endorse Bush in the election--I was rather flabbergasted at the time. But he paid lip service to fighting bigotry and discrimination against Arabs, blah blah blah, and it worked, since on average, Arabs are better off financially than other minority groups, and they wanted that tax cut. Could this change? And interesting question. If Arabic groups started throwing loud support to other candidates, they could be in danger of another backlash...

Although, it should be noted that Bush was soundly defeated in Michigan in 2000 anyway, even with the support of most of the Arabic community.

Why don't we make them all wear little yellow stars? That way we can tell them apart from us Germans . . . er, Americans.

On a side note, I heard that Italy was going to do the same thing. Can anyone confirm?

I'm not an expert, but I've heard some reports that said they have almost the same procedures in some parts of Europe...

Because that is also what he did BEFORE 9/11 . Civil Liberties aren't important to the man, and being a Civil Libertarian, that bothers me.... enough to make this Republican possibly NOT vote Republican in 2004 (probably Libertarian, unless the Dems have a good candidate).
You are the type of Republican that I totally diagree with, Imran. We've argued over central issues before, and I find it hard to believe that we belong to the same party. Anyway, I have no problem with profiling Young Male Foreign Arabs. After all, every 9/11 hijacker fit that profile. Al-Quade recruits from that profile. What is the problem? Would you be this upset if the Feds were profiling Asian women? Personally, I don't think that these measures go far enough. We should keep track of every alien that is in our borders be they an Arab from Yemen or a Caucasian from the U.K.. Any trouble making aliens should be sent out of the country permanently. Illegals should be tracked down and deported. Both borders should be tightened. This isn't creating a police state. This is protecting the sovereignty of the country. Why should American citizens be put in danger to accomidate foreigners?

Come on! Work with me here! We must stop this international Jewish Arab menance before it stabs us in the back!

Che, you can't actually compare this to Nazi Germany with a straight face, can you? Why can't a state take sercurity measures? Why should we let everyone in the world freely roam in and out of our country with no supervision or questioning? That is ridiculous.

We're a little too late for the Arabs stabbing us in the back. I'm wondering when we start carrying out hard-core terrorist attacks on them.

I'm sure the US could cook up some real scary biological weapons that would seriously **** their **** up.
