Boddington... did you forget who started America? Of course Britain is more like the US than Europe. The US is basically Western England. Although we take better care of our teeth
Is there like a CIA brainwashing station in deepest Aberysthwyth or something!!?
I guess learning a subject like Economics has got Stewie into realising how he can take advantage of the masses and become a selfish money grabbing capitalist - so much for the little people eh Stu?
Looks like your real 'Mock Tudor' colours are coming out for all to see...
As for knee jerk lefties like Piaktis, it's people like him that got Pim Fortuyn assassinated and the Dutch with his party as the second largest party in the country!!!
So MarkL, before laughing at our country perhaps you should look to your own backyard - because it's crawling it racist politicians!
As for wanting the UK to integrate more with the US...
Would you want to ally yourself more economically with a country with whom you have stood by side by side in it's hour of need and then promptly wages economic war on you through huge (and totally contrary to free market economics) steel and farming tariffs!!!?
Here is a test for you Stewie, bend over a suitable object and take your pants down. Then get someone to shaft you repeatedly with a broom handle (don't worry, it can be lubricated because after all, they are your allies!)...
If you can do that then you can have closer ties with the US, because these economic 'sanctions' are just about the worst kind of betrayal to countries the World over who came to stand by her - who knows, you may find that you like it...
As for the Eurocoms - The UK has not yet fully joined the EU because it still has reservations about it's ability to self govern and whether it's a good idea to join just yet.
Personally once the balance of power in the EU is taken away from the likes of France and Germany, the bureaucracy is streamlined more ( ) and the Euro finds it's feet - I'll be happy to join!
It's things like butchers being unable to display weights in imperial (as well as metric) etc that currently get my goat...
Also with currency, I don't understand why the Euro couldn't be regionalised with each country printing it's own Euro designs.
It works in Scotland and it would celebrate our nation's individuality whilst at the same time embracing the European community.
The point is not letting the UK become anyone's b1tch - we are allied with the US because we choose to, which by the same token is why we're in the EU...
I espouse an inclusive outlook - I cannot undestand for one moment why we should ally ourselves with one side to the detriment of the other?
The other thing that Piaktis 'tar everyone with the same arsehole brush' is wrong about is that most people in the UK are actually pro european... I, for example am another Lib Dem - as are most of my closest friends...
So Stewie, let me know when you want to try out the broomstick handle and I'll fly back specially!
P.S. What's this crap about the US taking better care of their teeth?

Why is a Euro complaining about any protectionist measure that has to do with the agri-business? The US is but a student of the EU in "waging an economic war" in that arena.
The steel tariffs were but a response to foreign dumping.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Do you understand what dumpingn is?
FYI, the steel tariffs were not imposed under the anti-dumping clause of your trade agreements...

MOBIUS, nice sensible post. Seems that of the UK posters only the LibDem voters talk any sense.

Oh Stew.... why did you have to drag CBs into this ?
"We have a central bank similar to the US's in openness, led by someone who would never utter the ridiculous words "I hear but I don't listen" (Dim Duisenberg)."
The BoE is quite open, so is the ECB - the Fed does not hold press conferences, for example. As for the not-listening comment - the BoE is much closer to the ECB in that regard than to the Fed, as the two former are independent CBs, while the latter is hostage to several political interests.
Now tell me, Stewie, where exactly do you see the openness, or lack thereof ?
Ah yes - "leading to EU countries experiencing higher unemployment"
EU countries like the UK ? Higher unemployment than the Netherlands or Austria... tsk, tsk...
There's no point arguing with him, he doesn't care about what the facts are.

I know. But with all the little kids around here, I had to do an AnnC and challange the misinformation. Or maybe Stew is boy enough to make an argument ?
Just as a sidelight, another good reason against fuller integration with the EU just yet is the European Commission - completely unelected. Replace them with the European Parliament, say I, and then I'll be one step closer to being pro-European.

Actually, the U.S. has spoon-fed Greece for decades.
paiktis is aware of that fact, he just likes to yank people's chains.

I think most countries have been involved in the spoon-feeding of Greece for a while. And if they need it, why not. As lnog as they don't turn round and bite the hand that feeds them.
