It's a stupid rule... and has no foundation in the Bible or Jesus's teachings. It was implemented much later. In the old days... the first son was the heir to the fathers estate... the second son went into the priesthood... and any other sons usually went off to war to earn their own fame and fortune (the crusades were just an excuse to get rid of potentially troublesome sons)
By not allowing priests to marry... it solved the problem of the second son not having any children who could disrupt the claims of the children of the first son if he were to die before his father.
