  • This is one of the longest trivia threads I have seen on here. And I never intended it to be a trivia thread, but you guys can continue however you like.

Europeans seem good at taking over places.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

      • I was joking -- you guys can continue however you like.

In my initial post, I admitted that I am ignorant when it comes to the districts/counties of any European country.

        Please don't hate me.

          • As for the history of European countries, I know the basic history of England and then Great Britain starting from Roman era. As for the hundreds of different German states, Prussia, and then Imperial Germany and afterwards, I know its basic history. I also know the basic history of France from Roman era onwards.
Hundreds of German states? Present day Länder you can count on 2 hands..

This is about right. Interesting aside: When I backpacked around the world and educated people asked me what part of the US, I was from, I said, "San Diego". They didn't know where that was. Maybe like an austrian saying he's from Graz. I started saying, "Southern California", when asked.
            The ppl Americans call educated

What's the capital of the Austrian Bezirk (~destrict/county) Landeck ?
This is a sick joke, right?

Please, please. Go to England, have an apple pie, go to Austria, have Apfelstrudel, and note that the dough is completely different. (As usual in Europe, it is not advisable to try it somewhere else. Sometimes you'll even get different stuff with the same name.)
Tried apple pie in the US, Germany, and Norway. All tasted the same. Maybe my mouth isn't frogly finetuned like certain sophisticated continental Europen foodies.

As well as all of the German Länder. What is the Capital of Hessen? (no Germans, please)
Didn't know Hessen was a Bundesland, but my memory mite be playing trix on me

No. It's one of the Bezirke in the Tyrol.
Bezirke yes... learned that in German class. But the capital? C'mon. Austrian delicacies

Europeans seem good at taking over places.
If the thread is not about some uninteresting American subject - like local Texan attire etc. We dominate Apolly to the annoyance of some Americans.

My sis could recite all the states alphabetically. Yes, she learned it in elementary school.

MikeH, the game Brittania has a few counties only... I guess it's somewhat correct from the viking invasion days and onwards.. I made my list from remembering the gameboard.

Monk, Munch was Norwegian! Not Danish.. I remember your old sig.

            Ankara, Turkey. One r GP.

            ***
            Name the German Bundesländer.

            And the 19 Norwegian regions.

Leirvik (or is it Lervick in English?) is the capital of which island group/country?

Name the capital of Upper Volta. Yes, it's funny so you should remember it. :doitnow: Also name the previous name of that country.

Where is Timbuktu, Addis Abeba, Ulan Bator. Yes, PH, feel free to look it up like u did on those others

Wiesbaden. Or did you want to hear Frankfurt ?

Alto Adige. And the capital of Alto Adige is... ???
Adige doesn't exist anymore. Is banned. Third verse only.
Don't know. Let me guess. If the Italians made only one Province of Southern Tyrol, it is Bautzen. No. Bolzano.

Tried apple pie in the US, Germany, and Norway. All tasted the same. Maybe my mouth isn't frogly finetuned like certain sophisticated continental Europen foodies.

This is just me playing with Paiktis reagarding Turkey being part of EU in future or not...
Never even think of trying to do so with a Greek. Might be dangerous.

Hundreds of German states? Present day Länder you can count on 2 hands..
Once upon a time - there were alone 50 or 100 cities which were subject only to the Emperor (Freie Reichsstädte), of which only Hamburg and Bremen are left as Länder. In fact, these cities were more independent than Germany or France in the EU. Many a Bishop had his own county. Normally one knows only the bigger entities.

Name all European heads of state - past and present
Try it yourself - starting with Minos - You know, the King of Crete about 1500 BC -
Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

No idea about the US states

                      In Europe you missed
                      Poland (Warszawa)
                      Belarus (Minsk)
                      Georgia (Tblisi)
                      as major countries

                      Liechtenstein (Vaduz)
                      Malta (ask Paiktis )
                      Monaco (is its own capital)
San Marino (is its own capital)
                      as not-so important countries

and I think Cyprus is still counted to Europe, but except that it is divided in a Greek and a Turkish part I refuse to say anything about its state of independence. Somebody will certainly shoot if I do.

You messed up a bit Yugoslavia. The "old" capital until about 1990 was Belgrad. Now it is split into
                      Slowenia (Ljubljana)
                      Kroatia (Zagreb)
                      Bosnia (Sarajevo)
                      Serbia (Belgrad)
and some territories in the south which I did not yet bother to learn because they certainly will have changed everything in five years

The capitals of Spain and Slovakia were right.
                      Estonia - Tallinn
                      Latvia - Riga
                      Lithuania - Vilnius
                      Albania - Tirana
