Scotland has its own parliament which makes it as least as sovereign from the UK as say Florida is from the US.

That's exactly what I mean. Florida and Alabama are a whole different kettle of fish from the USA, Germany, etc.

          Utah
          Pennsylvania

The Metropolitan Counties of Greater Manchester, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Midlands and West Yorkshire remain as geographical counties, but were abolished as administrative areas and replaced in 1995 with 36 Metropolitan Councils.
Which is what I argued all along...

For the middle-aged European Apolyton members, do you remember to what extent the history of United States was taught in your history courses/classes in primary education??
I'm probably what you understand as middle-aged. But as a consequence I've learned/read/seen so much that I cannot tell of everything whether I've heard it at school or not. Hm. So. Might be interesting for you: I'm German.
Early settlement of the Americas was more from the Spanish/Portuguese point of view. For New England, yes we have heard about the triangle of slavery.
Next station was the declaration of independence/human rights(and their forethinkers in Europe)/independence wars (supported by France and Prussia for obvious reasons).
                            Civil war,
First World War, and isolationism (mainly because of their influence on Europe), Recession
                            Second World War
Cold War, and USA as a super power.
I left school before the Cold War was finished.

From the Red Indians, we heard mostly about Inka and Aztecs, probably because they are not many groups of which one could try to reconstruct a substantial part of history.

Do most Europeans know all 50 of our states?
I do not. Never bothered to. I know all the German Länder but 16 is not so much. Once we had more than 300! Yeah! (No sorry, that's not factorial of 300).
Of other countries I usually know the province I'm living in if it is more than four weeks. Anyway I'm more interested in cities than in provinces. (e.g. Boston .... Massachusetts, Chikago .... Illinois).

                            in ancient times: Pella
                            in modern times: Thessaloniki
Third answer: Skopje. Which is the capital of the not-really-independent-but-would-like-to-be-or-perhaps-not-depending-on-who-rules-in-Belgrad Yugoslavian province Macedonia.

Stuck-up Austrian dish? Apple pie must be derived from it if it's not the same
Please, please. Go to England, have an apple pie, go to Austria, have Apfelstrudel, and note that the dough is completely different. (As usual in Europe, it is not advisable to try it somewhere else. Sometimes you'll even get different stuff with the same name.)

                            How about Turkey?
O yeah, with mushrooms and cognac!

Btw. It's a while since Turkey had a European capital.

Scotland has its own parliament which makes it as least as sovereign from the UK as say Florida is from the US.
As well as all of the German Länder. What is the Capital of Hessen? (no Germans, please)
Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

So British people today, are not interested in learning about how Americans kicked ass in the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812??
