Mozart was from present day Austria anyway (so was Hitler, mind you) what at his time was part of the Habsburg empire (austro-hungarian) IIRC.

And one more thing. Dutch people don't like to be called Germans . In fact it is just about the worst insult possible .

and sorry bout slight misunderstanding, when i said german i didnt mean German as in Duschland (sp), i meant as in Germanic tribes of norther europe, centered around presen day Germany/austria are.

          oh andyman.....

what are you referring to anyways when you say "Germans"?

If you mean Germans as 'citizens of Germany', then the Dutch, Austrians, and English are out.

If you mean Germans as 'Germanic peoples', then the Dutch are in, but Einstein, Freud and Marx would be out.

          So?

why would eihstien be out, i beleivew they asnd there families had bin there long enough to be 'Germanised' as it were.........

people seem to be missing the point of this post anywaym which is to talk abotu beethoven's 9th and bach

But seriously, when you consider Germany never realy had a period of 'Hegomony' like Britain or Greece have, it is a fairly good acheivmnent. And i still sdtick with the idea that German's ruled (cant say much for more recent time)

                Re: Hitler Was Right....

                except Hellenistic Greece i think
That's a pleonasm. You can say either Hellenistic period or Greece (It's like saying the French France )

And I don't think the artistic explosion took place during the Hellenistic period (which basically means the Hellenization of the known world through the conquests of Alexander the Great) but during the Goldern Century of Pericles' Athens.

                    *shocking admission*

I don't think bach and beethoven were all that great.

art is a matter of opinion. I'm sure you can find 3 billion people in this world who don't think that much of german "art"

science is more concrete. I suggest posting top german scientists.

                      1. Thanks, I feel so superior now

                      2. Hitler was not right. If Germans are so superior, why we lost WWII then?

                      3...

Yes, but Germany also gave us Echtelion, which causes your entire argument to collapse.

What to do, what to do....

I'm inclined to kill this on general principle, but the replies have been somewhat entertaining.

I think I'll let it live for the time being, but I will be watching to see things don't get out of hand.

germany lost the war cos the nazi govt was a bit, well, crappy.

Bach, Handel and hayden (sp) were the most influencial musicians on the barouque period. Beethoven wrote a symphony EVERYONE has heard, and all these guys will live on forever. some one like, i dunno, oasis or even the beatles wont even be in books in about 200yrs time. Bach and beethoven will......

                            Thinks I like about Germany:

                            _Its vibrant economy.
                            _Its state efficiency
_Its social democratic party as well as the Greens.
_Ramstein's videoclip with the apocalyptic title: «I want to see you stripped» (has a Hellenistic Arean approach to it).
_Its classical composers (but weren't they Austrian? )
_Herman Hesse's books and the German Romantics in general.
_Its dedication to the European vision

                            I'll think of more...

_The fact that it stopped selling military helicopters to Turkey after it found out that they were used to burn up kurdish villages (took a lot of political guts and underlined its humanitarian principles)
_The new «glass» parliement of Berlin (I think)

_Its European writer's book fairs. It promotes european litterature and helps expose european writers to the whole european public (the last one was dedicated to modern greek writers so I'm biased. But not really since it demonstrated again unparraleled organization. - The interviews, the translations, the coverage etc)

_The return to Greece of ancient Greek artifacts. Really, today's Germany gets
