            who cares about GDP when in other countries than Cuba it is concentrated in the hands of the few rich when other people are starving? Please!

            Sink to new lows? That's nothing compared to what you have sunk! THE terrorist, THE murderer. Bin Laden is a kid compared to the likes of you! And his cause is the same as yours. So why should I tell you apart?

                Psst! Paiktus! Cuba's economy is falling faster than a Grek Fighter Jet over Turkey. In fact, Castro has, for the first time in the 3 years the loosening of the embargo began, bought food and medical supplies at amazingly discounted prices. (We originally offered them for free, but he was too proud to accept "aid").

                      It is natural when you have a rich country right next door. This doesn't change the fact that life there for the people who stay behind is way better than any other petty semi-dictatoric US supported latin american regime. (despite the american economic war against Cuba).

                      Argentina wasn't so lucky as Cuba, Chile either, Cambodia, etc etc

                            To be fair, the Argentine gov't really had very little choice - devalue the peso or default on the loan, neither of which is a very good option. But what is unacceptable is the "State of Siege" bull****! I certainly am not about to shed any tears for de la Rua.

                            That's not fair. The GDP/capita is definitely not an accurate measurement in determining quality of life for a country like Cuba, considering the exceptional health care and education services the Cuban state provides, relative to the rest of Latin America.

                            They failed to respect the rule of law in not using the constitutional methods for changing government.
                            The law is flawed when it allows for the gov't to deny civil liberties to the people; therefore no respect for this law, and the person who enacted this measure, is warranted.

                            and the people who have destabalized it are people anrgy over the government not putting forth tariffs.

                              Use words only after you've figured out what they mean.

                              For Shi: your GDP statistics are useless in measuring the quality of life of the average Cuban. Posted pages from the 2000 UN report on living conditions throughout Latin America that demonstrated Cubans on average enjoyed a standard of living higher than all but possibly 2 or 3 others a few months ago. These official statistics were ignored by the vast majority of people here with assertions of fraud, etc. They are, however, much closer to the truth than anything you'll get from US sources (either governmentally or commercially).

                              For Lonestar: The depression you're referring to was mainly caused by the loss of markets for Cuban sugar cane and foreign aid ensuing the collapse of the Eastern Bloc countries. It was temporary, and Cuba's economy has shown marked improvement in the last 3-4 years. It doesn't help that their biggest potential market for agricultural produce and tourism has shut its doors. I shudder to think of the depression that would ensue in Canada if trade with the States was cut off.

                              For DanS: I've said it before and I'll say it again: with guaranteed refugee status waiting for you 90 miles away in one of the wealthiest countries in the world wouldn't you be tempted to leave no matter what form of government you had? Let in every Guatemalan who wants in and you'd empty that country pretty fast too.
