Tawianese rapper "Jay" Zhou is a MEGA-SUPERSTAR in urban China. You cannot escape his face in advertisements absolutely everywhere.
Some of his music is standard Chinese pop (sickly sweet packaged crooning). But I have heard a few tracks that were surprisingly different from the norm (e.g. dark, fast hard buzzing guitar).

At least he's cute.
Ill. You've got bad taste - even my mom thinks he's uglier than sin.

Also you get "live" concerts that are just basically karaoke with lots of lights and on a big stage.
Horrible garbage.

Asians seem to lack the artistic flair for music.
there I said it. I'm not saying they can't be artists. Their architecture is beautiful. But when it comes to music... What have they contributed? Flutes? bamboo reeds?
enlighten my ingorant ass. I know they probably have done more, but I have not heard of it.
I'm not saying they don't have the ability. It's a matter of culture. some cultures value education, that is why they are smarter. It has nothing to do with genetic differences.
and again- you guess did not mention Loudness (I mentioned them earlier). They actually did have 1 song played on a heavy metal station where I live. Though it sucked
Heresy!

"Jay" Zhou is more of a pop singer than rapper, though.

Your mom calls THIS "ugly"???
Yup. Not only my mom, but I don't know anybody who thinks he's cute.
I suppose that's one of the differences between the East and the West.

Yeah, an oft-noticed difference. And a lucky one, too! There's less friction if foreign guys chase the ugly local chicks (and a few ugly local guys) instead of competing for the desirable ones.
You are right, he's more of a pop star, but he's the only significant "rapper" I know of. Granted, they have to be pretty mainstream for me to actually know their name and face.
There is a tiny Chinese independant music scene (including punk) centered mainly in Beijing. It seems to be very small, of the hundreds (> 1,000?) young Chinese I've worked with, I've met probably less than ten interested in any kind of "alternative" music. Finding a young person into jazz or R&B is about as far out as you'll find.
The more I hear about modern Japan and China, the more SKorea sounds like some kind of bizarrely halfway point. SKorea is bad, but at least in Seoul, not anywhere near as bad as you're describing. Lots of people here like mainstream "alternative" such as Nirvana etc. etc. etc. which is certainly a wonderful change of pace from the pop, techno-pop, and pop-rap.

Yeah, this is definately true. Asians tends to like asians with more "western" features (round eyes etc. etc.), asians with more "asian" features are often surprised how many westerners end up hitting on them when they go to abroad.

So asian chicks dig white goes over in Korea?

Not necessarily. It seems that the people who get the most action are the asians who have a set of features that is more western-looking than average (that and baby-faces, pale skin and very little fat). Increasingly asians are getting plastic surgery to make their eyes and noses look more western.
