    Any Asian rappers out there?

      I blame karaoke as well.

Now that songs are written to be sung by your average teenager, at least in my neck of the woods, they are completely bland and dumb.

Actually, whoever said it's to do with a sudden break is probably right too. Look at today's Russian pop, it's awful. Since Japan had a totalitarian, pop-opposed dictatorship during world war two (and Korea was under occupation), no tradition to build on developed.

What was the South Korean military dictatorship's attitude towards pop music?

What, no-one's mentioned Chad Hugo yet?
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency

Yes, horrible horrible teenie-bop style baby-faced matching-outfits syncronized dancing rappers.

                I blame karaoke as well.

Also you get "live" concerts that are just basically karaoke with lots of lights and on a big stage.

What was the South Korean military dictatorship's attitude towards pop music?
Dunno specifically, but I'm guessing pretty anti, considering that they had police on the streets with rulers regularing mini-skirt length.

Also under the dictatorship, what we'd call pop wasn't all that popular in SKorea, it was more sappy old-fashioned (old-western style not old-asian style) ballads then from what I've gathered.

ok hold up. just because the japanese made DCO synths, doesnt mean they somehow have contributed to music. Yeah, the 303 is nifty, but its definitely not what led to electronic music (if anything the 808 and 909 were far bigger contributors to not only electronic music but also music as a whole)

if were taking this logic further youd wind up with all sorts of loony conclusions.

I seem to recall several 4AD groups having Asian or part Asian members- Lush, for instance. And wasn't Saffron from Republica part-Asian?

Then there's the Sadistic Mika Band from the 70s, who supported Roxy Music on some gigs, the hilarious Frank Chickens from the 80s, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Ryuichi Sakamoto....

                        Don't forget -

In the US Asian generally implies primarily East Asian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese etc. in the UK it tends to imply Indian subcontinent first then the others.

Anyway, seeing as "asian" includes 3/5 or more of the world's population maybe a lot of asian artists concentrate on their local markets?

I know Bangra sells huge amounts in the UK but not through traditional western music outlets so they don't tend to get into the charts here.

That would be the previously mentioned PuffyYumi.

James Iha, or was that Jimmy Iha. I forget.

James Iha, who I was trying to remember. Thanks. Isn't D'arcy part asian also?

                            As opposed to PuffyYumi, YumiYumi.
