True, he could try to get his crap together on several aspects. He should be making no expenses whatsoever, and progressively gather enough money to go, at least to Anchorage (which, at least, is an actual city). He should try to solve his medical problems, or educate himself with the Net in his abundant spare time.
But the way you treat him is completely off the reality of Barrow. The land there isn't full of opportunity at all. There are simply no jobs (there are no DVD rental shops as well), and the best shot he has to make money is to follow NYE's advice: find some guy who wants wood cut, and don't be afraid of blisters."I have been reading up on the universe and have come to the conclusion that the universe is a good thing." -- Dissident

Or we could raise the money to let him fly to France where he could then claim asylum on the grounds of being forced to live in a harsh, desolate wasteland.Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. It did make me chuckle reading that bit about the library book- I had one due back for today, and didn't fancy the one-hour walk to the library, so I used this amazing conrtaption called a telephone and renewed it that way. Technology these days, eh?
The year's being good for my jobhunt at the moment, quite a few prospects from looking at only two recruiters. Arr!

Fun fact: The nearest city to Barrow with a population larger than one million is Los Angelos. That's the equivalent of me, in England, having New York City as the largest nearby city.lExult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. These are all very good suggestions, if perhaps not always realistic.
I'm in a similiar sort of situation, although my problem is not that I'm "cut off" from opporunity, employment, and life in the fast lane, but that I don't want any of that, and have cut myself from it volountarily. It's not always easy finding your own way in this day and age, though.
I've actually done a number of things in Oerdin's suggestions - I've started to garden and grow some of my own vegetables. Last year was the first year I had a garden, and so it was mostly a learning process and something to keep me busy. While I didn't get alot of monetary value from it (and I didn't intend to), what I learned will be used to make my garden even more abundant the next year. Of course, I live in a climate with a short growing seasons, and I'm vegetarian. So having a self sustained food source is a long ways off But it saves a few dollars, gives me enjoyment, and teache sme alot.
I've also done a good deal of volounteer work at the local Art Gallery, leading to me geting paid for the occasional few weeks of work when there's an installation or event and alot of extra help is needed. It's also opened alot of opportunities to experience new things - I get to meet visiting artists, go to their workshops, and just meet alot of new people in general. Aswell as alot of diverse job experience.
I've learned to play the Harmonica. Not with the intent of joining a band or making money off it, but it's fun, cheap, and stimulating entertainment.
I've thought about the "missionary" work - only in my case it'd be environemental work. Planting trees in Africa, or shoveling baboon **** in taiwan or something. I'm not really ready for such a thing right now, though.
Becoming a "house husband" is something I dream of, but is not really somethign I have control over.
And my latest project is to learn pottery. Thanks to the connections I've made through the art gallery, I've gotten to know a few potters. I've taken a workshop, gotten some pointers from a friend, made an investment of buying 40kgs of clay and some tools (for only $60 or so) and am already having fun hand building and learning to work the clay. I also know someone who has a pottery wheel collecting dust, and they're willing to let me use it - hopefully I'll get ahold of that soon and I can work my way towards making more 'sellable' pieces.
I never did go through with geting my GED, though. I was really motivated for a while there... and was even thinking about working my way to university and such but kind of lost interest in it when I realised that I'd just be selling myself out and not really doing what I *want* if I go down that path (I'm not adverse to university in itself, but there really isnt a whole lot of studies avaiable that interest me, and I'm not really interesting in having a "real job" anyways - I'd probably just end up geting a dimploma in folklore&mythology or some crap). While having a GED wouldn't hurt, I just sort of put it on the back burner and forgot about it. But I've also been considering going to a credited Art School near here, which would be just as good for all intents and purposes, I think. This whole art thing is a bit new to me though, so I have to work on that a bit first before I'd be comfortable making that move.Rethink Refuse Reduce Reuse
