      I have my GED.

Apparently I have to say this again, I CANNOT GET A JOB UP HERE AND I HAVE BEEN LOOKING NON-STOP FOR ALMOST AN ENTIRE YEAR NOW. Without a job I have no money, without money I have no way out of here under my own power. So quit telling me I should get a job.
You got family in another big city outside of Alaska that would let you stay with them?

Ted, he said his mom was in Missouri (if I remember the OP correctly, yes, I'm not going to go reading it again), but doesn't have the money to bring him down.

I feel for you Space, and don't listen to idiots like TEF. Who are you living with presently?

We could start a save Space fund to get him transportation costs, but sounds more like it's the room and board that his Mom can't afford.

Actually after I read the original post it sounds like he just needs transporation costs.

Who are you going to blame for the overdue library book?

Myself. We recently moved from one place to another place (heater went out in the first place and we werent going to wait for our slum lord to get it looked at) I forgot I had the book until I recieved an e-mail from the library about it. Im going to bring it back tomorrow.

Btw, didn't you talk about going to Sweden?

I was looking into it but my getting into school over there was looking like too much trouble.

Yesterday I too was intensely fed up. It seems I can't get a job because I'm not stupid or lazy enough (judging from current problems trying to get a rebate from the Inland Revenue, 3 different offices give me 3 different answers).

However, I am NOT giving up. I'm starting off by visiting by going through old job adverts and compiling a mailing list, then I'm going to do a mass mail shot with an updated CV.

It probably means I'm going to be running up and down my present location for a good few weeks (with probably no result) but I just CANNOT give up...

...and I'm not going to just sit and wait to be rescued either.

Best of luck mate. Keep trying - the important thing is to have things to do, things to look forward to and dreams to chase!

                    • Space,

I feel for you man. Barrow is not even the last place I'd like to be. What exactly do people do there? Oil? fishing?

Any got curious and did not know anything about Barrow.

                      Most northen point in Alaska.
                      Ave daily temp 10F
                      pop: two sources 1500 and 4500 (city/county?)
Racial mix 89% indian, 10% caucazoid, 1% other
                      An Eskimo villiage?
I did see some jobs there, but not for an 18 year old with a GED, except a job opening for labors and police work.

That being said, you should really consider getting a degree in something that you like. Long term this is the best route.

I'm guessing that there is no way out of that place except on an airplane or on a boat.

My best guess on getting you out of there is to get a few buddies and get passage on a commerical boat (you have to convince them you'll work) that will dock elsewhere at some point and jump ship with whatever you have.

Once you get to a bigger city you should be able to find a mcjob and a cheap weekly hotel. It will not be easy.

Is there no way to get to a college...via loans, grants, etc.?
