Why you drivin a Ferrari when you can only go 10 miles an hour in it???

He could go south for salmon canning season. It ain't great pay, and it ain't a great job, but if you save your money, you can make $5K. You'll have to stick it out 'till summer though, before you can go. If you camp through the summer, you can save a good portion of it. $5K will take you pretty much anywhere you wanna go and set you up for a few months.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
He's 18 with nothing to do for 6 months so he needs to get his GED, take a few junior college classes, and do something creative unit summer. Maybe learn guitar like I will shortly be doing.
Once he has his GED he can apply to colleges in the lower 48, work in a cannery over the summer to get cash, then use the money to move south for college.
He should go to school in AK. Unlike the rest of the country, who have to pay an income tax, AK pays its citizens a dividend from the oil. I imagine college is about as cheap there as in CA.

California is pretty cheap for residents (CSU costs less then $3000 per year full time; UC around $5-6k depending upon schools) but out of staters get hosed to the tune of $5k extra in CSU and a full $20k in UC. I was thinking like Oregon or Washington maybe even one of the mountain states or Arizona State. It alll depends on his grades and if he can do well on the SATs or not.
Space, Tomorrow morning go down to the education office and see what it will take to get your GED ASAP. Do that full time and nothing else until you have your GED in hand then sign up for the SATs. Once you have your SAT results start applying for colleges; any good library will have a refrence guide which will list the average profile of each college's students. Find a school which you're grades and SAT scores would qualify for and then get the hell out of dodge.
If you don't qualify for squat then start junior college at the nearest junior college. Go to see a councilor and have them make a 2 year education plan for you and make sure you tell her you want to transfer to a four year school. Then study your ass off to make sure you pass your classes. Once you have 60 units transfer to the four year school.
If you go to school full time you can get 15 units per semister times two semisters plus 6-8 units in summer school. That's 36 units per year. You'll need the extra summer classes because there are always pre-recs and stuff you have to take which you forgot about.
Space you ****head, stop complaining. I'm paying 30,000 a year that I'll have to pay back once I graduate to take ACTING as a major. I'm a ****ing ACTING MAJOR...do you know where that will get me in life if I just give up like you did? No where at all.
But I'm not giving up. No sir, I will be paying back my loans as soon as I graduate. I hold two jobs right now just to pay rent and bills - do you think it will be any easier because I have a highschool diploma and a college education? No sir, it won't.
So I say stop ****ing around, get a job or two (I've worked since I was 15 to afford college). I'm 21 now, I'll be 23 when I graduate. If I don't make it into films or Broadway within a year, I'll have to make ends meet by taking 2 or 3 dead-end jobs.
Don't ****ing complain because you're 18 and don't know what the **** to do. Get off the couch and start working toward your future. And stop *****ing too - if we *****ed about every little thing that caused us suffereing, we wouldn't have time to work and make money that would allow us to alleivate said suffering.
In the mean time, until you shape up, I have no pity for you. Get out there and get a ****ing job, or sit on your ass and be nothing.
Its YOUR choice.

he might want to consider a trade skill. If you don't mind blue collar work, it makes a decent living. And doesn't require college education. I recommend one of the "easier" ones. Like air conditioning and refrigeration. Yes even in Alaska, those fields are in demand.
He started his thread "Why I hate my life". It only diserves a fair rebuttle.
Guess what - his life doesn't suck. He doesn't have to wonder where his next meal is coming. There's no worrying if he'll be able to make enough for his kids to have water. He doesn't have to choose between paying for groceries and paying for heat. He isn't going to question whether the cereal he's buying is cheap enough to afford him an extra loaf of bread. He won't have to question buying Doom 3 over putting food on his table this month.
Now I'm not faced with all of these problems either (although I am with some.) However, for him to say his life sucks SO MUCH that he's considering quitting is a slap in the face of all of us who actually WORK for what we WANT.
So I say, get a job banqueting or delivering food or washing dishes or delivering newspapers. At least you'll get enough money each week to be able to decide what to do not a week from now, but a month from now.
