It's good see some people standing up to Walmart's anti-union activities. The Chinese government recently took legal action against Walmart for union breaking in it's Chinese stores and, under Chinese law, they can now have their business nationalized if they don't allow unions to organize. Canadian workers have also had to get legal help before Walmart would even pretend to give workers a fair chance to unionize.

Personally, I try not to shop at Walmart first because I find most of the things they sell to be really low quality but second because the company's management is so anti-union.

How sad for capitalism? Wal-Mart has like no competition anyway.

Wouldn't you like to know a few facts before jumping to conclusions? We have lots of union jobs here in the states but some companies such as Walmart are acting in a decidedly anti-union manner. We used to have very good pro-union laws (I'd say far to pro-union) but Reagon eliminated the teeth to most of them back in the 1980's. I'd say Reagon went to far and we need to seek a balance between workers and management. It's bad for the country as a whole if one side is to much stronger then the other so we need to keep both sides in balance.

Ending Walmart's union breaking is a good place to start and restoring the tougher legal penalties for union breaking would also help.

Floyd's objection to Unions is, I believe, based upon the government's actions. The government in the USA requires companies to recognize workers who want to unionize whether or not they want to, are not allowed to fire pro-union workers, and I believe may not shut down stores specifically because it decided to go union.

Of course, if Floyd did have his way here, it would mean to a large scale degradation of living standards for a lot of people..

unions, like corporations, are good when moderated.

I hate unions as much as the next guy, but doesn't disallowing unions to exist fly in the face of freedom of association.
The employers have freedom of association too, and it's their property.

'cause sometimes unions shoot themselves in the foot because they want to spite the company.

case in point, United Air Lines. the mechanic's union in that case?

Diss, unions have a track record of being corrupt and they have corrupted governments, just like big corporations. I oppose both...

I should clarify, my opposition is to government giving them legal standing, i.e., mandating special rules to protect them. For corps these take the form of how corps are dealt with much more leniently when committing crimes or being sued. You know, all those special rules that have evolved over the last ~130 years that effectively turn a corp into something more protected than other associations.

Just as important, Wal-Mart is expecting Christmas sales to be rather flat, blaming it on their policy to remove a fair amount of discounts on a lot of their items.

Personally, I try not to shop at Walmart first because I find most of the things they sell to be really low quality but second because the company's management is so anti-union.
Given that Wal-Mart sells the same brands that, say, Target or Kroger does, I find this statement odd. (Note that I have never bought clothes there, other than the odd pack of socks).

Wal-Mart said it treats its workers fairly and has an open door policy that lets each negotiate directly with management.
