We survived without ANY allies back in the 1939-1944, we survived without ANY allies 1945-1991, we havent ever had and still dont have need to join to NATO. Common european defence is of course another thing.

Why would it be in Finlands national interest to join a European defense union? Ok, Finland is part of the EU, but they can get an opt-out on military matters if they wish.

What exactly is NATOs function in the current world anyway?

USA goes to war without its allies, peacekeeping is best done via UN, NATO unnecessarily ties US troops to Europe, NATO is out of enemies....

I cant think of any justification for its existance

I think any solution that reduces military spending is good. If we concentrate in defending EU borders and peacekeeping we can scrap the internal armies.

It's a threat because it cost us money to house those troops over-seas, not to mention the cost in beefed-up security because our bases are prime terrorist targets.

Plus you Europeans have cried wolf too many times and have constantly bitten the hand that has kept you safe from tryanny. Ingrates.

Because not all NATO members are in the Union nor are all the EU counties in the NATO. Its an outside force, it simply doesnt serve our common interest. Also it has too much history to bear to win support of all Europeans.
