The OFFICIAL United States Presidential Election Thread! II
They called OH for Bush and they don't want to call Bush the winner.

George W. Bush (REP)* 54,046,145 51% 269
John F. Kerry (DEM) 50,308,047 48% 211
Ralph Nader (IND) 368,902 0% 0
the one set of numbers few people really want to talk about
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh
Wisconsin is going to get really close. Kerry leads 19k (<½%), 89% votes counted. I checked out the precincts invididually, and got a 20k advantage to Bush (Kerry stronghold votes already counted).
Yes, that's right. Should they just be thrown out, then?
I'm wondering why they aren't counting them starting tomorrow?
Maybe verifying legitimacy?
What I can say is that for a modern democracy to not be able to determine a winner by the end of the night is... a little bit strange.
Is the right of one person to vote, who couldn't be bothered to register properly and show up at the right station, important enough to hold up the government of your nation of 300,000,000 for 2 weeks?

You can say that again.

Kerry shouldn't push it. All candidates except Gore have conceded with much closer races. See Nixon.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
O' well, four more years of easy targets of hatred
Let's hope they recycle the cabinet a little bit, though. I think Keyes needs a seat of some kind, hopefully big-level.
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency
"That’s the future of the Democratic Party: providing Republicans with a number of cute (but not that bright) comfort women." - Adam Yoshida, Canada's gift to the world

They'd have a little more meaning if studies didn't show that Bush supporters didn't have their facts straight on Iraq, Al Qaeda, and other issues. I'd feel a lot more comfortable with the election if by and large people had understood the issues, but this simply isn't the case.
Jefferson was right, lack of education is the largest problem a democracy faces.
Anyhow, I was a bit shocked when I heard on the news that the Republicans are excited about being able to pass even more tax cuts and drill in the Alaskan Wildlife Preserve now that they control even more of the House and Senate.
Whoever thought the debt was going to be addressed by Bush going to be eating their words.

"If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper -- that makes this country work." - Barack Obama
