The proper cause of action to take if one encounters such behaviour is to report it. Responding to flames, generalisation and racism with more flames, generalisation and racism doesn't solve anything.

But it does - can't you see? It shows how irrational his argument is. Look back over the posts; you'll see that the only time people addressed Laurentius' remarks (before you came along) was to refute his statement. No-one supported him. Honestly, what do you think was more effective - showing why his argument was ineffectual, or you (indirectly) calling him a racist. You acheived nothing except making yourself a bad guy in this thread, while the others did their bit to show why Laurentius was wrong.

Chew on this Speer. With your Europeans are racist remark, yourself and Laurentius have much more in common than you might think.

van Gogh was never in agreement, and he would be the first to call hypocricy on the mayor's part



Secondly I find it really tasteless for the mayor to claim Amsterdam is such a great place when it comes to freedom of speech: It is really not something he has brought there, and I'm sure Amsterdam is not outstanding in this respect when compared to most other cities, towns or even villages.

Besides, this mayor has so far to do anything that could enforce his claim. During his term, one after the other issue of intolerance among Amsterdam citizens has surfaced, and the mayor is behaving like a meek sheep when it comes to dealing with it.

Let's face facts, in life Theo van Gogh was, basically, a big fat bastard who prided himself on being controversial. He stirred trouble everywhere he went and he did it gladly and unapologetically. There probably wasn't a politician in the country who didn't hate his guts (apart from Hirshi Ali who's just as big a troublemaker). And now some politician is singing his praises -and conveniently promoting his own city- just because he's dead?

The hypocrisy of it all is quite sickening, really.

Now, like I said, if it was anyone else. Someone who, say, thought Theo was really a great guy when he was still alive, then there wouldn't be that much trouble.

I guess you are right that the image of Holland is a very tolerant place. The reality is not as perfect as that.

Apologies for the threadjack. My condolences over Mr. van Gogh. I gather that his films weren't universally liked from this thread, but he played an important role by not avoiding controversial topics. Sadly he paid the ultimate price.
