So when I argue against the religionists I should try and conjure up the ghost of Ockham?
I've read the piece you wrote on the Mill limit, so I understand what it is.
The best solution is to avoid such situations in the first place.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

If you had Ockham available at the time, then yes you should. Obviously you don't so you have to make do. Why walk when you can ride a bus? (so to speak ).

Then you are 15 months behind the times on the subject

But I also find it strange. I grew up in a pretty rough area of a large US city and never had any problems like that, nor heard of anyone who did. Sure, I'd hear of people getting shot (noone I knew, mostly gang members), and people would get robbed, but getting punched in the face and kicked when you're down? That sounds excessive. Did they beat you up to get your wallet etc, or did they do it for the hell of it. In the urban US when people are mugged, you'll only get beat up if you resist, and then only to the point where they can take your stuff and run. Redneck areas are another story and I'm not familiar with them.
Is this common in the UK? Just random unnessesary violence? I never thought so...

When you live in or grow up in suchareas, you tend to be far more aware of your surroundings and nip developing bad situations in the bud. I never had a problem until I moved away from a bad area and let my guard down. Then some visiting thugs got me cuz I wasn't paying attention.

It's cuz he fought back. They don't like it when you have the temerity to try and hurt them, and apparently he did actually hurt them. That would have made them mad.

So I think handguns/revolvers (I don't know much about guns so probably some Americans could help me out here) should be legalised, but only for law abiding, upstanding people who have proved themselves good, reasonable people and not dilenquent... so obviously criminals and the undesireably element should be forbidden ownership. Now obviously they can get guns anyway illegally and they can be easily hidden which does suck.
Unfortunately, "undesirable element" is purely subjective. There really is nothing to stop burberry-clad townie ****ers against whom nothing has ever been proven or even accused, walking into a gun shop and going shopping for more phones and CD players.
I really don't think easing weapons restrictions would work in Britain. The people who would need them - the not-cool, not-hard, not-swaggering defenseless wouldn't buy one, and the aggressive dickweeds would. It might lead to a decline in the townie-****er population, just through ghetto-style infighting, but that's hardly a sensible solution to anything.
Four unarmed teens vs a rapier would be really funny, admittedly. But only if the swordsman knew how to use it, and only until one of them draws a newly legalised handgun.
I think if I were in a situation like you were in, I'd be grateful they didn't pull a flick-knife, rather than disappointed I didn't have a pistol. The old cliche don't bring a gun to a knife fight holds just as true a level down: don't bring a knife/rapier/whip chain/gun to a fist fight! Escalating the lethality of anyone is generally not a good idea, because there will never ever ever be a system which can distinguish people who will only use weapons legally from those who will not.

Right. Legalise guns, so thta when this happens again, they'll have guns to. Now THAT will be fun.
How is it different if everyone has a gun, aside from the fact that people wont survive experiences like you just lived?
You know, someone faught someone else somedaty. And that person lost, so he made a weapon so it would'nt happen again.
The next time, he used that weapon, he won. But the opponent made a bigger weapon, and on, and on, and on.
Discusting.
Use your freakin fists pussies!

Just so you know, people like that really don't give a **** if guns or legal or illegal. It was illegal for them to assualt him but that apparently didn't stop them.

Yes that's what we are told. Just give them whatever they want and hope they let you go.
I have to say it is a smart choice although it doesn't sound good. And will this encourage them if they always get what they want?

You don't own the Mill limit. Once you've explained it, unless you actually change the underlying concept anyone can apply it.
