The Mill Limit is now more, I've redefined and expanded it, but I'm not prepared to discuss it until I can present it coherently with its assumptions also clearly presented. So no dice.

But far less common-whaleboy found the most common motivation. Oh, whaleboy, you also forgot fear. That is a strong one.

I have a belief in freedom, just right now I have a belief that these bastards deserve nothing more than cold steel in the esophagus.
EDIT: I have the view that freedom is cool... my belief involves something resembling sharp impliments tearing through bloody burberry.

When you live in or grow up in suchareas, you tend to be far more aware of your surroundings and nip developing bad situations in the bud. I never had a problem until I moved away from a bad area and let my guard down. Then some visiting thugs got me cuz I wasn't paying attention.
This is very true. Alot of it is just knowing how to handle yourself. I remember when I was young we used to hang out at the train stations and, um, "annoy" out-of-towners... and it was always so easy to know who was from where by the way they acted, dressed, talked, etc..
It's cuz he fought back. They don't like it when you have the temerity to try and hurt them, and apparently he did actually hurt them. That would have made them mad.
Yeah, I think whaleboy should take a lesson from this... as much as it all sucks. Don't fight back, you really need to treat these people like professionals. They've come with a specific purpose, and once that transaction is completed, the incident is over. You can always call the bank and close your accounts.
But I think, like Che said, the key is to avoid these situations in the first place. If you must walk in these neighborhoods, walk with purpose. Always be looking around, but with your eyes, not your neck or you'll look paranoid (ie, a target). Also, if you've got jewelry or a nice CD player, put them away. You don't want to seem obviously above the socioeconomic level of the locals... mess up your hair if you have any, and have a kind of dead/mad look on your face. Remember, the key to these games is intimidation. Someone who looks like a bum and who's walking around with a scowl looks too out there to be scared in the first place... they'll move onto the next target.
The best defense in such a situation is to have a belt of (fake) TNT that you show to them and that you tell them you are going to let it explode if they just touch you. If you are a somewhat good actor you could play this realistic enough so that they let off you.
Or maybe instead of TNT you use several smoke grenades that you tell are "fragmentation grenades" and that you can even make use of and try to escape, should they really be so mad and try to attack you.

I can't go to the police because technically I think I did them more damage and it's my word against theirs, though admittedly, as snobby as this sounds, my RP accent is likely to cut more ice than their slack jawed Northamptonian drawl. Anyway I can't really be bothered anyway, I'm happier that I hurt them than I would be if I was just a victim.
You daft bugger. You were legitimately defending yourself.
If you don't go to the police, forget about an insurance claim. You're also letting them get away with it.
