Whaleboy. A few thoughts.
Don't carry something you aren't prepared to use.
The police will get upset if you have even pepper spray or CS gas. Carrying anything which can be classed as a weapon in the UK throws "self-defence" out of the window as an excuse. Should you be found with such an item you will almost certainly be prosecuted (maybe not someone who is female or elderly but someone of your age and build will end up in court).
Your choice is basically to carry something, use it, walk away and hope nobody recognises you later or not to fight and rely on the police. However the likelihood that, even if caught, the scum will only get a joke sentence of a couple of months inside, rather than 50 strokes of the birch doesn't really give much confidence in the judicial system.
I own and practice with a set of ninja swords and have tried various martial arts weapons over the years, nunchakus, tonfa, batons and various knives. Swords, even a shortsword are far from easy to conceal and use without a lot of practice. Same goes for most baton type weapons which have the same problem of sheer bulk. Large knives are out for that reason too.
If you can find one (they used to be sold) one of those telescopic batons might work. There are various companies who sell knives and other items mail order in the UK.
If you feel you must carry something then you will have to practice with it regularly and be prepared to use it. Also, if you are set on fighting back Queensberry rules don't apply. Punching in the face isn't adequate. Breaking an arm or a knee will give the thug something to think about rather than attacking you.
Your choice. Stay safe and I hope you never have to face such a situation again.
