  • Long overdue:

    3rd worst political thread ever!

    -Drachasor
"If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief -- I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper -- that makes this country work." - Barack Obama

    • I looked for a video of the June 5th speech in which what sounds like an audio prompt is alledgedly audible. I couldn't find the whole thing, but I did find a short segment, from a CNN broadcast.

In the clip, a second voice can easily be heard reading the speech, line by line, just ahead of Bush.

I'm sorry, I lost the link (I was visiting a lot of sites simultaneously), but I did save the clip to my local drive. It's about 3mb. If someone wants to post it somewhere, I'll email it to them.

This short fragment only suggests that Bush may use an audio prompt for speeches. However if the prompts continue into the press Q&A which followed (as many claim to have heard), that would be pretty strong evidence that Bush uses a wire.

edit: added "from a CNN broadcast".

        • A plausable explanation for the voice heard during the Chirac speech, from isbushwired.com:

As to the times in which viewers heard a voice other than the president's speaking his words, i.e. on the night of 9/11 and during the Bush-Chirac press conference: there may be an innocent explanation for the two voices. A poster explains it may be a voice used for live subtitling, in which a "re-speaker" repeats what is being said into a voice recognition engine in order to generate text.

"I think the Bush - Chirac clip is pretty simple to explain. Many networks run a text-service for their live programming, where they use a speech-recognition engine and a re-speaker to dictate to that engine what is said by whoever speaks in the program. The text is then fed to be overlaid the "live" programming in progress. Live here means delayed so that the timing of the text is more or less matched with what is going on on-screen. The re-speaker needs to be a second or two ahead of the "live" feed for the recognition engine to be able to generate the text. What I think you hear here is the voice of the re-speaker that has for some reason been overlaid the "live" voice-feed."

That sounds like the simplest explanation, unless it emerges that those actually in the room at Bush-Chirac heard the voice speaking before Bush, in which case they heard a prompter. Viewers on television said that Chirac reacted visibly to the voice, but he may have been reacting to the seeming echo.

Who cares? Does it change anything if Bush was getting coached? NO.

Even if his performance had been stellar, it would not really matter- a performance does not change the record of incomptetence and mismanagement of his admnistration, nor their pathological hatred of the truth.

                • We occassionally have the closed caption on. Because of the craptacular signals here in Jax we sometimes lose sound on our tv. The CC text never appears at the same time as the voice, but is always a second or two behind the speech. I don't think this "re-speaker" thing is what's happening, especially since the text of a speech could simply be given to the networks to CC.

                  • From CNN:

CHANHASSEN, Minnesota (AP) -- Bush campaign aides are laughing off widespread Internet suggestions that President Bush was wired during his first debate with John Kerry, to get help from advisers.

A photo taken during the September 30th event appears to show a small, boxy shape between the president's shoulder blades.

Musings on various Web sites suggest it could have been a radio receiver so the president's aides could feed him answers during the debate.

Spokesman Scott Stanzel calls the idea "ridiculous," and adds, "Some people have been spending too many hours looking at left-wing conspiracy Web sites."

He adds, "Did you hear the one about Elvis moderating the third debate?"

                    • Boy this is some realy good material you guys found, I am 90% shure he was wired yet experienced some tecnical dificulty that cut out the signal forcing him to improvise (terribly). Its ofcorse frigtening and totaly expected at the same time, I have always felt the man was a puppet in every policy desicion so why not wires it all makes sense. Next Debate I will be watching out for strings moving his arms.

Che, I also have misgivings about that explanation, particularly: is state-of-the-art voice recognition software that good now? That would be near real-time translation at a very high degree of accuracy.

However, in the spirit of fairness, I felt I had to post the possible explanation.

The real question remains: did the prompts continue (as many claim) into the unscripted press Q&A which followed???

                            If so, that's absolutely newsworthy.
