I'm trying to find out more about this, but at this point I'm shocked, disgusted, worried and appalled.

There are reports of years of miscellaneous broadcasts of speeches, briefings, and the like in which a prompters voice is clearly audible on the broadcast!

One example, from a June 5, 2004 12:45 pm press appearance broadcast on Fox and CNN:

George Bush and Jacques Chirac held a joint press conference at the Elysee Palace at 12:45 p.m. ET on June 5. During this press conference, a strange echo interrupted the proceedings without any comment by Fox News during their post press conference debriefing.

When Chirac spoke, the original French he was speaking was in the background, followed by an English translation in the foreground. Oddly enough, when Bush spoke, both the background and the foreground were in English, a strange "mistake" to be sure. Even more odd is that Bush's actual, non-delayed voice in the foreground came AFTER the background voice that was speaking English, rather than translating Bush's speech into French. It was clear to the audience, but not to the speakers themselves because of their earphones, that Bush was reading from a script that the background speaker was using, and that the background speaker was speaking a second or so ahead of Bush.

Now, get this. As soon as Bush finished his speech, he quickly started the question and answer session by calling on Jim Angle with Fox News, without opening it up for random questions from the floor. When Bush answered Angle's question, the same strange echo that occurred during his speech occurred again. The voice in the background PRECEDED Bush's response to the question with exactly the same ENGLISH words Bush was speaking. The audience, including the TV audience, could easily discern that Bush was answering Jim Angle's question from a script. The next question went to Chirac, and the third question was supposed to go to Chirac, but the French journalist insisted that Bush answer her question and bypassed Chirac. Bush handled the question, but awkwardly, using the same trite phrases we have heard before when Bush is speaking with no "cheat sheet." After that happened, Bush took one more question from "Monchure" (Monsieur) Gregory with no echo. The background voice was gone. The remaining three questions were directed at Chirac.

Q President Chirac, given the fact that your government also believed that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq prior to the war, do you believe that there was a worldwide intelligence failure? And despite your opposition to the war, do you believe that Iraq is better, or worse off, today?

Mr. President, what role specifically would you like the French to play in Iraq going forward? Merci.

PHANTOM VOICE: The French are going to provide advice...

PRESIDENT BUSH: Listen, the French are going to provide great advice. President Chirac has got good judgment about the Middle East, and he understands those countries well.

Thinking of the Supreme Commander GWB, I am reminded of an incident last Saturday when he was praising French President Chirac. I was watching CNN when all of a sudden, I heard another voice speaking Bush's pre-scripted lines before he did. That's right---the other voice would be heard BEFORE Bush's voice. What was that?

I thought at the time that that may have been done to give translators a head start on the President's words. Later, I had a call from a reader in Germany who told me she heard the same thing on CNN International including that same voice telling Bush what journalists to call on before he did. We have never heard that before. She asked: "Is someone controlling the president like a ventriloquist"?

It reminded me of a trick that some TV correspondents use for their on camera standups. They pre-record their standups for playback in their ears, and then turn to the camera in a way that you can't see the ear plug. They then play the tape and mouth their own words a long a few seconds later. It takes practice to be able to repeat the words but it makes for a smoother delivery without having to read. If I am right this means that this technique is used by the President to give his speeches the appearance of spontaneity, especially if he can't remember his own words. In this case, CNN picked up this audio track, perhaps because it was on a radio mic.

If this is true, it's serious and it's appalling! The president of the United States reduced to little more than a meat puppet. There's an enormous story here on several levels, including what a pathetic man Bush is if this is true, who, exactly is leading our nation, why this hasn't been covered more closely by the major media outlets, how the workings of democracy are affected when information can be manuipulated to such a degree, and many other dire questions.

I hope to hell that it's a poorly-deployed hearing aid or something - anything- but a secret prompter!

"There was nothing under his suit jacket," said Nicolle Devenish, a (Bush) campaign spokeswoman.

"It was most likely a rumpling of that portion of his suit jacket, or a wrinkle in the fabric."
Ms. Devenish could not say why the "rumpling" was rectangular.

Nor was the bulge from a bulletproof vest, according to campaign and White House officials; they said Mr. Bush was not wearing one.

When I heard the "let me finish" line, I just thought that the moderator thought that Bush was done and was maybe asking the next question or asking Kerry to respond.

Regardless, the label of him as a "Milli Vanilli President" is very appropriate.

First, just as confirmation, the bulge is all wrong for any Kevlar or body armor, the back plate (when it has one) typically goes accross the spine following sort of the shoulder blades - best I can describe without a photo. Plus, I sew, and there is no way fabric will bunch like that without something underneath. Period. That I will guarantee.

Why this non-standard device? As in how big, why would they, etc.? Well, if they use a commercial device it can be bugged, eavedropped, whatever you want to call it, and definitely be detected via frequency use, even if it's scrambled. The two way statement also make sense, though I must admit that my knowledge of concealable ear-pieces (versus general electronics) has already been increased by this thread. Plus, and please don't laugh at this - I work for the FAA and we are still using 35plus year old green screens and CRT's (please, don't ask - it's way too embarassing) - his handlers could be using older "standard" equipment that the Secret Service or other government agencies still have around. Finally, damn it, Dubya, we told you to stand up STRAIGHT!
