COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry said Thursday that Iraq's Ayad Allawi was sent before Congress to put the ``best face'' on Bush administration policy.

Shortly after Allawi, the interim government's prime minister, gave a rosy portrayal of progress toward peace in Iraq, Kerry said the assessment contradicted reality on the ground.

``The prime minister and the president are here obviously to put their best face on the policy, but the fact is that the CIA estimates, the reporting, the ground operations and the troops all tell a different story,'' Kerry said.

Allawi told a joint meeting of Congress that democratic elections will take place in Iraq in January as scheduled, but Kerry said that was unrealistic.

``The United States and the Iraqis have retreated from whole areas of Iraq,'' Kerry told reporters outside a Columbus firehouse. ``There are no-go zones in Iraq today. You can't hold an election in a no-go zone.''

Remember, folks, that Kerry was a declared enemy of the government of South Vietnam as well. He is at least consistent on this kind of issue.

He's at least finally criticizing what he should be criticizing: Bush's track record, specifically w/regard to Iraq.

He is at least right on this issue, as compared to the lying incompetent now making the decisions.

Yes, and as we know, John Kerry has helped run Iraq in tandem with Allawi, so he knows exactly what is going on and isn't relying on the New York Times, harried staffers, and pundits as direct sources.

Saw a bit of that speech... It's agood thing the united Iraqi people can now enter democracy without the fear of violins.

Otherwise they are going to hell in a handbasket.

There were no hurricanes the last time. So, I guess you just CANT hold elections in Florida, period.

                Alawi is "running Iraq"?

Its pretty easy to know what is going on in Iraq- besides the newsmedia you ask non-for profits, the UN, and look at the very public statements by the Iraqi authorities themselves.

Are you trying to imply Kerry wouldn't even take the time to get his security breifings as campaigning takes all precedence over competancy to make a decision?

I thought that article looked fishy- it's Guardian stuff. They write as if the idea that Iraq is a hellhole is concrete fact.

And Kerry thinks that he can build a better coalition? Not by insulting our allies he won't.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

These Iraqis are our lapdogs right now essentially. After all, the survival of these guys is based solely on 135,000 US troops plus being there to protect them.

The government has lost all control of Florida? You can't go there right now without getting into a firefight with a bunch of heavily armed militants? Wow, those were some hurricanes!
