Seriously though, we have building standards for earthquakes, why not hurricanes?

Putting in a few rounded edges onto buildings seems like it wouldn't cost much and would keep the wind from doing so much damage.

It's a radical idea but in the long run would save billions.

We have building standards for hurricanes. Older buildings, however, were grandfathered. And no amount of standards are gonna stop a Cat 4 hurricane from wrecking havoc.

BTW, anyone take me up on investing in OJ futures? I wish I had the money to do it. Next year's orange crop was wrecked.

That's not how it works. BTW, it's illegal for non-farmers to own citrus trees in Florida. The farmers are afraid we won't take good enough care of our trees and that it might allow citrus canker to spread. Not that it stops people. I plan on having my own citrus trees when I move to South Florida and get some land.

            I disagree!

There are some designs that would negate wind damage, though they would be radical in appearance.

Sounds good, I'd also want to have citrus trees if the climate allowed it.

Here we have to grow even tomatoes and cucmbers in greenhouses - and even then we have to just hope for the best.

I doubt there is any design that a mobile home could have that would protect it from a Cat 4

                  I'm talking about regular homes.

This is the South, Teddie. A huge chunk of the population is damned poor.

                      Well DUH!!!!!!!!!

But not everybody is living in a damn trailer home. Especially the people with money on the coasts.

And by the way Florida has different demographics from the rest of the South because of all the Northerners who relocate there and all the Haitians and Cubans that immigrate to the south.

How many "once every hundred years" hurricanes in do you need to get in a year for a Republican to admit to climate change?

You would be surprised how many people on the coast live in trailer homes. Where Charlie made landfall was a trailer park.

Yes and no. There are a lot more Notherners living here, but even in Miami you can find native crackers. It's a schizophrenic state.

Just went out for a little bit. Needed to get out and be around some people after being shut in for the last few days and after my little tornado scare (we had a tornado warning and then I heard a rumbling sound getting louder, grabbed the cats and ducked into the bathroom and under a counter . . . it was just thunder, but still . . . )

My apartment complex is a mess. Branches are down everywhere and I even passed a fallen tree. Leaves and needles are all over the place. When everything starts rotting it's gonna smell. Frogs are out though, croaking like crazy.

Well, Frances has spawned over 60 tornados in her wake. All day today, the radio kept going on emergency warning, and one passed nearby, maybe a mile or so away.

Ivan may hit us, ironically enough, because of a trough created by Frances. It is expected to hit Jamaica as a Cat 5 storm. Yikes.
