  • I agree vel, the conventions are not what they used to be. The candidate is now known prior, and no real work on party platforms are argued. They have outlived their usefullness except as an extended campaign appearance. But we know if that money was freed up, it would be used for something equally silly.

I miss the conventions from when I was young as there was actually some suspense, and debate. Not this lovely unity crap.

      Blah, blah, blah

I think the average New Yorker would rather not be spending tens of millions to guard members of a party who don't do anything but badmouth this city back home, cut aide to the city while doing Pork with our surplus taxes, and who come use our tragedy as a political tool while not even yet having fulfilled all their promises to the city that they made after that tragedy.

So let the protestors show the world how trully unpopular and unloved they are in this city.

It's one thing to "protest"... What they are doing goes FAR BEYOND peaceful protest. But I can understand your perspective GePap, since they support your point of view, everything they do, whether illegal or not, must be OK

Let's see... the City of New York BID for the convention... They wanted it, and all the money that goes along with hosting such a large convention. If they didn't want it, they wouldn't have bid on it. Any money being spent is part of the cost of doing a convention, and is being made up by what the delegates are spending while in town. So the average New Yorker should be thrilled, because New York is making a profit on this one.

It's either agree with you, or you're allowed to get ugly and show 0% respect. I'm glad you're so smart that you know what's good for everyone.

            • I have to agree that the 2 Bush daughters were terrible. After the grown-up speech by Schwarzeneger to have 2 immature 20ish year olds tell bad jokes about their parents, was highly inappropriate and really destroyed the mood.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

              • A pity we can't bottle or bag all the BS that spews out of the convention hall (either party). My what lovely fertilizer! Would go a long ways toward recouping the cost of the d@mned things.

My solution: Let's scrap the conventions, scrap the electoral college, put absolute dollar-value spending caps on the campaigns, and render anybody who spends so much as a DIME above it ineligible to run.

Anybody who airs even ONE campaign commercial not firmly focused on the issues gets the boot, and instead of two years of campaigning, let's give 'em two months. Should be plenty of time in this shrinking world of instant communications.

Or, we could just kill off all the current politicians and start over.

                  Profit?

Many parts oif this city are half empty due to the fact large sections of Manhattan were scared out expecting serious disturbances, or a terrorist attack. Any possible gain by bringing in 48,000 tourists has probalby been offset by larger number of residents leaving town and taking time of work.

And the City government asked for this convention-last time I looked a republican administration.

After decades of republicans insulting NYC, after a decade of cutting aide to the city, undermining transportation funds we need- giving us the lowest per capita homeland security funding, menaing the city out of its own pocket pays tens of millions a year to pay for HS, which last time I looked is a federal reponsibility- after not yet coming through with all the promises made to us by Bush in Sept. 2004, then why the **** would we want republicans here?!

They hate us, have said that vocally for years, have acted in that hatred of us by denying us billions in dollars and not fulfilling their promises to us, and we are supposed to let them in with arms outstreched!? **** NO. When republicans act like they actually think NYC part of the US and not just a cheap political tool to impress the folks back elsewhere by using 9/11 as a boogeyman, then we will welcome them.

Yes... Profit. You are obviously not in the convention business and have no clue how much revenue this creates for the city.

Many parts oif this city are half empty due to the fact large sections of Manhattan were scared out expecting serious disturbances, or a terrorist attack.
Hmmmm... and just who is causing this problem... oh that's right, Democrat protesters violating the law... they are screwing themselves

Any possible gain by bringing in 48,000 tourists has probalby been offset by larger number of residents leaving town and taking time of work.
You want to bet on whether the city makes a profit on the convention?

And the City government asked for this convention-last time I looked a republican administration.
Asked is the wrong word... they bid on it, and were desperate to get it... because contrary to what you think, conventions are BIG business, and do mean big revenue.

                      • Examples of "republican love" to NYC:

5.9 Billion dollars still owed to NYC of the 20 Billion Bush promised when he came to NYC, in that visit Giuliani lauded.

Cuts of 68 million in national security funding, a cut in 2000 of 172.1 millions in law enforcement funds, 18.9 million this year, plus about 246 million in cuts to our firefighters, whom these repugs claim to honor.

In short, republican control of congress can only mean less and less money coming to NYC from the Feds (and again, NYC still sends far more to washington than it ever gats back)- meaning a greater burden to New Yorkers. Why the hell should we be glad those freeloaders who have the gaul to then insult us as freeloaders (meaning they are ignorant asses)?

                        • So that gives NYers an excuse to verbally/physically assualt convention delegates. Yep, that's the attitude I'm talking about. You should be ashamed.

                              Letting your biases show again...

Maybe the protesters who are breaking the law... causing disturbances that are disrupting the city... making life unsafe for their fellow New Yorkers... maybe they are the real problem here. They are ones that are not only acting in an illegal fashion, but also acting like total asses... So maybe you should look in a mirror to see what's causing the real problems in New York

I had to laugh at the shots of a few delegates that walking through the abusive crowds waving at them in a friendly manner despite the insults hurled. They could take it.

It's just too bad that some of the delegate's opinion of NYC is going to be colored by a handful of degenerates, since NYC has so many great things to offer.
