Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Americans have long been accused of cultural boorishness. One of the earliest and most famous was the French writer Alex de Toqueville, who mad a grand tour of the USA in the mid-19th century. Alex de Toqueville came tio the new world expecting to find a utopia, but instead found the inhabitants to be quite boorish and culturally unenlightened. Let us not forget however that Alex was a "de", a son of the aristocratic class. He acquainted himself with our common people and found them lacking in education and manners, yet I doubt he ever bothered to acquaint himself with the common people of his own country. At the time he toured America in most places in Europe educating working people was considered useless or even downright seditioius. Working people were considered too stupid to educate, and unable to make effective use of literacy. It was still commonly beleived in Europe that educating the working people would only make them rebellious.
Furthermore what were the manners that de Toqueville found so lacking in Americans? As an aristocrat de Toqueville was undoubtabley expecting to find here the same deferrence instilled in the lower classes that he had become accustomed to in France, a deferrence pounded into the people by centuries of brutal oppression. The problem with de Toqueville was that he came here expecting to find a new utopia, yet he was unable to rise above his own prejudices.

"Why is there a general sneering going on east to west? " Because compated to the USA Europe is impotent, thus is limited to sneering when it comes to rivalry.

I won't join in the general remarks on Americans being culture-less. Certainly, America is home of a broad variety of culture and arts, as has already been pointed out, most importantly jazz, but modern music culture in general is a cultural export good, America the leading nation IMHO, even though much junk is being produced too.
Also, there does exist American movie culture, even though the bulk of incredibly stupid Hollywood movies makes this hard to believe sometimes.
Lucullic culture, though, is clearly underdeveloped, but this is due to the anglo-saxon burden.
"High culture" is also underdeveloped. Though my hometown is with 250.000 inhabitants pretty small, we have a decent operahouse, a good number of theaters, 4 really good major arts festivals every year (Styriarte, Steirischer Herbst (Styrian Autumn), La Strada, Diagonale, maybe add Classics in the City). We have dozens of bookshops for every branch, etc. etc.
And we're not even as reknown as Salzburg or other cities for our culture. When I compare that to American cities of the same size I visited: It will always seem ten times more provincial, virtually no cultural activity. This gets me to think that cultural life in the US is concentrating more in special and big centers than over here, where you can consume culture also in smaller towns to a higher degree.

Yes, but by that Wernazuma, you make the assumption that people who go to the Opera are superior, a simple choice of aesthetics. You could argue that americans are too individualist, or loud and annoying , or inconsiderate, or any other thing that regards to how they behave to other people, but saying that they're inferior, or cultureless because they don't like operah is very snobbish. haven't heard of "different strokes for different folks"?

How come, in that case, that the Americans find it necessary to sneer back so much?

But I don't think we're sneering back for the same reaons. Ours is more a reaction to you telling us we're just a bunch of yokels, which you have been continually doing since we left on boats from your ports.

No, I do not equate class from culture, but class has a great deal of influence on culture.

Which just happens to suggest that whatever set the sneering off, it's long since ***-for-tat.
