In Canada you get one vote... you vote locally for a party, and whichever party wins the most ridings nationwide determines which party will lead the parliament, and consequently who will become prime minister.

Most countries at least get 2 votes.

I've always thought Ohio politics to be rather clean in comparison to a lot of other states (perhaps especially New Jersey? ).

With regard to the county sheriff, ours was voted out last time after running up a department-wide meals and entertainment tab of $50,000.

Overall, I think we should trust the people in this regard and if they choose somebody that's dirty, then they reap what they sow.

I still have a voter card at home. It's for a woman who - i suppose - used to live in my current apartment. I have been there 4 years now and i still get pieces of mail for her every 6 months or so.
I could have given that card to any woman and she would have been able to vote with it.
My point is: they should still ask for some piece of ID, even if you have your card.

I'm curious. Do people in other countries elect high school class representatives? Where I grew up, we elected a class President, VP, Treasurer and Recorder.

We did at my school (presidents for each class).

Not VP and treasurer though. Those were only for the schoolwide elections (for student body council).

At York University back in the 80s there were five or six college governments plus a central student government with a directly elected executive plus representatives elected or appointed by each college government. But two of the colleges at the university refused to be part of the central government for several years. When they returned, my college appointed an "ambassador" who had no power to vote, but my college government had the veto power on the money we contributed to the central government.

If that's not confusing enough, my college's government operated on open meetings. Any member of the college could attend a meeting and cast a vote on any policy.

So if you wanted to get something passed by the government, you had to convince who ever turned up at the meeting. Direct democracy.

The meetings would go on for hours, but strangely enough, it seemed to work.

There are elections separate from the national ones as well. Here in Knoxville, I've already voted twice this year and there's another vote coming up in August.

No. I think the dog-catcher thing started as a saying/joke, as in "After that mess, the once popular governor couldn't even get elected as dog catcher". Oh, some small towns might actually have such an elected position, but it isn't common. I know I've never seen it, and 5 pages of google isn't giving me any info on dog-catcher results.
