  • So make sure you apply the rule across the line and tell the provoker of my response the same thing.

                Say what?

                1. You said Moore makes up stuff out of thin air.

                2. I replied, you mean like you.

                3. Then you insult my mother.

Please tell how 3 is a valid response to 2 in any way. I was willing to overlook it it because you're Ted Striker, but now that you're claiming it was a justified response, I'm not quite so forgiving.

                  • What do you do when they shut down their oil to us?

                    • Interestingly, they are not so rich that they can afford to turn off the pipelines very long, especially if their foreign wealth was inaccessible. I am under the impression that we could wait out a Saudi oil embargo with our strategic reserve. As well, other countries would very likely increase their oil production to take advantage of opening in the market.

It would be a little rough, but I think we could break them.

I could also be completely FoS.

We could also support the independence of Al Hasa and the Hedjaz. Without their oil producing coast and the birthplace of Islam, the Saudis are nothing.

On what legal basis? Among other things, a lot of their assets happens to be a continuous flow of cash back to our markets as they buy treasury securities and invest in US stocks. Even if you accomplished this (and even if national courts within the G8 upheld the government seizures), the impacts on global financial markets would be devastating.

Yuppie traders and fund managers hate instability and unpredictability, and when you suddenly put a trillion or so dollars of equity and treasury bonds into question, everybody else freaks out, as they're unable to properly evaluate their intended investments.

Meanwhile, a cutoff of Saudi oil production would imbalance global supply and demand so much you'd see a global financial meltdown that would be an al Qaeda wet dream. Eventually we'd sort it out, but the economic effects and unemployment would be like nothing the world has seen.

The latter. The Saudis could hang in for years - they wouldn't be able to spend as profligately as they do, but they have a lot of hard assets, and black markets work very well in that area of the world.

The capacity of the SPR is 700 million barrels. That's less then 8 months of Saudi peak production, and that's the good news. Now for the bad news: We're not at full capacity, IIRC, we're about 90% full. We also can't get it all out - that's just the reality of deep well pumping. Once the pressure drops below a certain level, you can't extract it. So let's assume another 10-20% or so. When you get low, the pumping efficiency goes to hell in a bucket, so it takes you a lot more energy to extract a lot lower flow, so in time, your daily production declines, even when you have remaining extractible oil. We also can't pump it out as fast as we can pump it in, and then there's the whole problem of pipeline capacity, so we won't have the ability to restore the global supply/demand balance.

We could also support the independence of Al Hasa and the Hedjaz. Without their oil producing coast and the birthplace of Islam, the Saudis are nothing.
Do we really do such a good job of picking reliable proxies in the region that you want to see us have another go at it?
