What claim? It was others who seemed to be saying that teenage pregnancy is a reason for a lower age of consent. All I said was that it isn't, as lowing the age of consent has not been shown to decrease teenage pregnancy. I didn't make a claim, I just said that tat claim was untrue. Teenage pregnancy being bad is no reason to lower the age of consent.

Agreed. People will have sex anyway. The reason the AoC was raised from 13 to 16 in the UK in the 19th century was to protect young girls from being sold into servitude/prostitution by poor families. As for having consenting sex, I think such a legal barrier has no effect, so you could eliminate that legistlative construct and teenage pregnancies would remain that same.

Yes, as I said, I was showing that the others claim that "a higher age of consent leads to lower teenage pregnancy rates" has no evidence for it, and since I have shown an example that works in the opposite way, looks very tenuous. In other words, that fact, that somewhere with a much lower age of consent has a much lower teenage pregnancy rate, "dismisses much of the idea that a higher age of consent leads to lower teenage pregnancy rates". I was claiming that the others claim was false, not claiming any form of causation at all. I don't know if there is causation, but I do know there isn't evidence to support causation the other way, and that I have an example that contradicts causation the other way. I never claimed more than a correlation.

You haven't shown an example in which it works the opposite way, that's the thing. Thus, the claim hasn't been dismissed, because it has a pretty firm logical basis (the idea that making something illegal will make it occur less is pretty sound, IMO).

Considering I'm 19 and have a steady girlfriend, somehow I don't see this as about my libedo. More that I can't stand the state imposing something that only affects those two people, and which both consent to. I believe a 14 year old can decide for themselves whether or not they are ready, better than blanket legislature can. I remember being 14, and I remember being able to make my own decisions, as most of the people I knew seemed to be able to. Legislature was not needed.

I think we do need laws for under 12s, and possibly under 14s, to stop sexual predators. However I think at 14 people are savvy enough to decide for themselves.

But hey, carry on with the ad hominems, if it makes you happy.

Nope -- I just can't swallow the possibility of legitimate recognition of a 30 year old man who wants to "get it on" with a 15 year old girl.
