      • Martin snapped and killed all the other leaders. Then he invoked the War Measures Act.

I, for one, welcome our new overlord.

          Give me a break.

That is the most discussion we have has on issues, ideas, and policies we have had in years. Sure there were a few times where they talked over each other but most of the time that was not the case.

            • I was seriously disgusted by the debate, it was a waste of my time. Good questions was raised, but every politician ignored the question and just ranted, accusing others of things they deny...

It does. Still don't know if you're joking or not.

If not, are you going to the pride parade?

                  • Speaking of the pride parade, it took me a good many hours to figure out why the poster we have at work* for the Edmonton parade had a guy with a coon-skin cap on. Then I noticed that the catch-phrase this year is "Pioneering Pride".

                    True story!

My impressions, from when I could actually hear someone speak.

Duceppe and Layton thrashed Martin on corruption and past policy. That was especially apparent near the beginning, but continued throughout.

Martin nailed Harper on the letter to the WSJ during the Iraq controversy. Bad move, Mr. Harper, for someone who aspires to be a Prime Minister of Canada. For all the other lies and scares that may be put to bed, he will never hear the end of that, because it's the truth. I have to wonder if he is as clever as some people say.

Harper totally blew the soft ball Duceppe lobbed towards him on defence policy needing to be determined after national policy so that it would fit. All Harper had to say was that it has been the policy of Governments of Canada since Pearson to support the United Nations and countries around the world who need the help of professional soldiers to keep the peace, ONLY WE NEED A REASONABLE NUMBER OF THEM TO BE ABLE TO MEET COMMITMENTS, and they need to be equipped so as not to pose a danger to themselves and their allies. Instead, he started blathering on about 'sovereignty'.

On social policy, Layton to Martin: "what is your opinion, sir?! Why won't you allow this [same sex marriage] to be voted on in Parliament. What are you afraid of?!" Yes, that's right, to Martin. That's the line that will live on from this debate. Layton just won the election for Harper.

Generally Layton and Duceppe ripped Martin to shreds, while Harper was too polite too often given the 'rules' of the event, and when he did speak he was too wordy and lacked a sense for the kill on the essence of the issue(s). Not always, but mostly.

While doing well in holding Martin's and Harper's feet to the fire, Layton came off as yappy. I finally realised what he reminds me of. It has been bothering me for a bit. He reminds me of a South Park Canadian; all smile and flopping head that never seems to stop.

I'd say that Martin did OK, and all things being equal he would have, but... not all things are equal. He has a 'legacy' that he can't shake (not sure if we should allow him to) and he's got too much weight around his neck that is dragging him down.

I heard it said, again, that Harper won by not losing. I suppose that may be true, but I was hoping for a lot more from someone who is supposed to be smart, is supposed to be good on his feet, and who has had so much time waiting for this campaign. In a few short weeks the Governor General will be calling him. I hope he can inspire more confidence from that point on than he did last night and tonight. Canada will need it, badly.

Final thought... Jim Harris (leader of the Greens) was on Mike Duffy's show on CTV. I thought that was good of CTV to give the Greens at least some exposure, even if he had to share the stage with 3 analysts from the other parties. He was given several opportunities to have an uninterupted go on several topics. Anyway, one of the last things he said is something to the effect that 'I 'm beginning to like Gilles Duceppe actually...' I found myself agreeing wholeheartedly. It is too bad the man is a seperatist, because he made a hell of an impact.

Funny thing: I actually agree, as well. I've watched a bit of the debate here, and most of the French one, and some other stuff, and he really does give off some good vibes. It didn't even bother me when he said "star-stangled banner".

But yeah, in all seriousness: the man has a good presence, he's likeable, and can be a lot more interesting to listen to then some of his more extremist cohorts.

Maybe we can turn 'im one of these days...

                          • Duceppe was the coolest. He seemed more normal than everyone else, who seemed genuinely fake.

                            • If the Greens manage to get a few MPs in then they deserve a place at the table. Until then there's no reason to include a party which has marginal national support and absolutely no history. 4 people is already a handful

                              • Duceppe isn't as much a rat bastard as the unholy trio of Parizeau, Bouchard and Landry.

He is, however, a fanatic, no matter how much he tries to disguise it.
