Right, but you have to stop eating meat.

For me a life without meat would be like a life where the sky isn't blue - it's just not right.

edit: when i say meat i'm mostly referring to game that we've hunted for ourselves and we know where it's coming from

South Beach is low carb/low-fat, but not as low carb as Atkins.

As far as massive kidney and liver problems after 20 years, that would only be a problem if you were losing weight for 20 years. You are not supposed to stay in ketosis after you reach your goal weight.

how am I a bigot. I just don't like those commercials. Of course I don't like most commercials.

And I fail to see Subway as "health" food. Those commercials annoy me as well.

            The reponse:

Just for "fun" I can tell you why. Because fats are converted into acetyl CoA, the same thing that Glucose is broken down to in order to enter Krebs. Fat is a way to store massive amounts of 2 carbon units in long chains. but in Mammals, it CANNOT be converted to glucose.

It doesn't happen in large amounts although can happen in small amounts. I wonder if they are aware that acetyl coA can be converted to glucose? However only in the liver IIRC.

                PH, go to the thread.

I would like to see some head-to-head on this between two obvious experts on biochemistry such as yourselves.

Ted Striker's right. Atkins does help to provide some subtle improvements to the "recommended" diet - white bread, potatoes, white rice are all junk food.

                  The ideal diet consists of

                  i) lean protein (chicken, egg whites, tuna)
ii) low-GI carbs (oats, wholemeal bread and pasta, brown and basmati rice)
iii) good fats (peanuts, oily fish, olive oil)
                  iv) fresh fruit and veg

Always have a protein source with every meal, and never have fats and carbs together. So two types of meal: protein & carbs (earlier in the day), and protein & fats (later in day).

This is all easy. Include 1-2 sessions of weight training a week, a 1-2 sessions of moderate cardio and you'll be moving towards the ideal body shape IMO.

Nope. Carbs are essential to the proper functioning of a human body.

Not those detailed in your quote. It would be healthier not to eat them.

But you don't need that many, just enough to power your brain and red blood cells. Everything else can burn fat.

true. But that doesn't mean flour and refined sugar are good for you.

I think Adkins is a waste. All you need is some good ole' fashioned discipline, and you can lose weight, like me. Granted, not everyone has discipline. But that's another matter.

But I don't eat fries, white bread, and I minimize my refined sugar. Those things are not good for you.

The thing about Adkins is not eating bread. There is nothing wrong with eating 100% whole grain wheat bread. And thjat's what I eat. I think it tastes better too.

You have achieved True Player status. Perfect meal plan.

The beauty of this plan is that you can use it both to gain muscle and to lose fat. Hell, if you are really good at it, you can do both at the same time.

It depends on how active you are If you are a rower like lightblue you'd need tons of carbs.

Still, the best way to go about it is to increase the amount of exercise you have.
