    You also have Sonny Bono.

Dude, you are so uncool, homeless people use you for heat.

Clint is Mr. Cool (see "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", "Dirty Harry", "Fistfull of Dollars", "The Outlaw Josey Wales", etc). Ask Pekka if Clint's cool. The man is like the first supercitizen! Super cool . James Dean has got nothing on him. Bronson is a cool dude as well.

Punk is a form of music firstly, and only distinctly an associated attitude.

Lemme see, uncool, that's essentially the same, as, well, hot, isn't it?

So punk music started with the Ramones?
The 70s anti-big-label music movement, perhaps, but punk is much older than that.

The politics of 70s punk was Anti-Establishment, nothing more. It was pro-freedom, anti-oppression. The Chicago scene was rife with anarchists, who hung with the Socialists, who argued with the Commies, who all ignored the Change-From-Within mainstreamers as poseurs.

Che is right in that it was a DIY movement at its core.
But it was much more about the music industry than political spectrum analysis.

The fact that people here are espousing ANY sort of must-have political leanings is laughable. A true punk just wanted the "ins" to be thrown out. Liberal or conservative? To a punk, those are just two sides of the same coin.

I'd love to take time to rip apart Che's band list, but I only have time to make a couple comments...

The Cars? not punk, never even close. All they ever wanted was a major-label deal.

Bands like Gang of Four and The Clash were about motivating the disenfranchised to take control of their destiny. They had political agendas, and the DIY punk approach served them well.

The Ramones were about being bored kids from the suburbs with no better way to get their kicks. But their incredible lack of self-consciousness and fierce dedication to performing despite their lack of musical skills was inspiration. (It got me started playing bass, fr'instnace.)

THe Police were never punk. A show-biz band from the bleached-blond get-go.

Merle Haggard? Clearly a punk. (BTW, I met and spent time with this man. Turst me on this one.)

I'm rambling now, and my next corporate meeting, on how they're killing my pension plan and reducing my health benefits, is coming up, so I'll stop.

                    Ask Pekka if Clint's cool.
                    I rest my case.

Anyway, real punk songs are like this one by NOFX which you can get free on the internet:

                    "Idiot Son Of An *******"

                    He's not smart, a C student
And that's after buying his way into school
Beady eyes, and he's kinda dyslexic
Can he read? No one's really quite sure
He signs stuff and he executes people
Maybe that's why, he doesn't have any friends
Cocaine and a little drunk driving
Doesn't matter, when you're the Commander in Chief.

                    Idiot son of an *******
He's the idiot son of an *******
                    Idiot son of an *******
He's the idiot son of an *******

Put on some make-up, turn on the 8-Track,
I'm putting a week back on the shelf,
Suddenly I'm the President, of the United States,
But then I woke up, and realized I'm still me.

He's too dumb, to eat pretzels, apparently smart enough to fix an election.
Moved boldly into the White House,
but most people voted against him.
He likes naps, He really likes naptime, A couple of naps and then a nap and then he's ready for bed,
He may be from Bush decent, but he's always gonna be the unpresident.

                    Idiot son of an *******
He's the idiot son of an *******
                    Idiot son of an *******
He's the idiot son of an *******
                    Idiot son of an *******
He's the idiot son of an *******

                    He's our president!

Same with any actor then . PLAYING cool is a prereq to being cool. You can be putzing around with D&D, but if you PLAY cool and others see you as cool, then you are cool.

                      --

JRabbit, yep that is the 'attitude' of the punk, which is VERY distinct from 'punk music'. Merle Haggard is a punk, but doesn't sing punk music. At least, I bet he wouldn't say so.

Real punk started in Britain in the mid seventies. Apart from the Stooges nothing else in the US was much good. The Ramones are fun, but that's about it.

Technically, with Television. Everything before them was "pre-punk:" the Velvets, MC5, the Stooges, Modern Lovers, NY Dolls, etc.

The Cars? not punk, never even close. All they ever wanted was a major-label deal.

They started punk, but were changed by their producers. However much we may disdain them, their early demos are clearly not the New Wave crap on the radio. And they took their money and turned around and supported the Boston punk scene, so I still have to give them some props.

THe Police were never punk. A show-biz band from the bleached-blond get-go.

Not as The Police, the the band started as English back up for Cherry Vanilla, who was punk.
