Looks like it's set for the 14th then. Any opposition?

14th of august in Paris?
Mmmm... Lemme see... I live half of the time in La Ferte sous Jouarre (70km east of Paris, pitiful access by train and I don't have a car) and the other half in Paris itself. (it's pretty easy to guess where I am at any time: if I post on poly I'm at La Ferte, otherwise I'm in Paris). So I could probably come . I could probably accomodate some people too, depending on their will to sleep without a mattress and whether I send my wife and children to La Ferte or they stay in Paris (which would probably bore them to death and make drinking less practical for me -at least the children-). I could accomodate 3 or 4 persons plus a few if they don't care sleeping on the floor.

I just checked the price for the Shuttle travel on 14th August, expecting the price to be around £30 - the usual cost for my day return tickets to France by this means of transport.
I found out that if I want to break the journey up so I can spend the entire Saturday in France (i.e a 2 night stayover; leave Friday back on Sunday) the cost goes up to £173!
Grumble......

Dang, that's expensive. A plain ticket is probably cheaper.

Maybe you can take a ferry-ship between Dover and Calais (never did it myself, but it was the standard before the chunnel).
Sadly, the second weekend of August is the busiest in the whole summer vacation, because 15th August is a holiday, and because it is usually the hottest day of the year. As such, you will probably find much higher transportation costs in private mass transit, and you'll find much more cluttered autoroutes.
Mappy tells me there are 15.70 € autoroute tolls between Calais and my home. I don't know whether it will be significantly higher during that weekend, but I doubt it. It is a reasonable price, especially if you are 4 in the car.

I've done ferry trips before when I was younger - compared to the Shuttle they seem really slow . These days the only car-ferry trip I'd likely take is Portsmouth-Cherbourg as it shaves off a lot of time getting to Normandy, Brittany, La Vendee etc.

Dauphin: Is that £39 per car, plus toll? I'd happily split costs with you if you can take me from this side of the tunnel to Paris. I was expecting to have to use Eurostar, so be around £70 each.

Still more expensive in the UK and many other European cities.
Really? I thought alcohol was cheaper here than in Finland. If not, that is good
