From what I understand, there was also legislation authorizing the state's attorney office to spend $1 million defending the would-be law through its inevitable appeals journey throught the federal court system.

Although it's been defeated this year, odds are it'll show up again next year, though the legislative makeup may change enough in the interim that it won't get the critical support it had this year. State term limits are still in effect in South Dakota.

South Dakota now lost its coolness. North Dakota is much cooler.

Well this is what happens when the Court butts in where it doesn't belong with boneheaded decisions, it only serves to radicalize the debate which allos like stupid crap like this.

[frothing-at-mouth-mode]Yah! Those *damnable* activist judges! BEHEAD THEM ALL! How *dare* they stand up for a woman's right to choose. In fact, how dare they try to change society at all! We need more literalists on the bench! 1789 or bust![/frothing-at-mouth-mode]

I don't care about abortion, being a guy and already born, but I don't like the idea of judges creating laws out of their asses. Folks act as though first trimester abortions were mentioned in the Constitution or something. This is an issue that should be left for the state's and their governments to decide.

And I am not going anywhere near South Dakota.

... that the life of a human being begins when the ovum is fertilized by male sperm

Aren't sperm sexless? Since this bill went out of its way to specify some sort of a magical sexed sperm, then obviously it does not concern itself with mundane abortions but rather the magical and special kind that go on in the La La Land that the legislators are obviously living in.

Do you guys think that this issue will ever be solved, or will it always be a huge debate, that will never end?

Well the courts have definetly radicalized the issue. Who knows what will occur?

I've been learning a lot about this issue because of a Womens Studies course and I gotta say - the abortion issue would be a hell of a lot different if Roe v Wade never happened.

In fact, it's not so much an issue of whether abortion's should be legal - the issue is that the courts took a stance that far surpassed most of the laws in the country. This meant that instead of popular opinon gradually moving toward a consensus (even if each state was different) we have a polarized issue that probably won't be decided for a very long time.
