  • I have another response to the "it's a choice" (which is the basis for thinking that people can convert*) line of argument.

To be gay in this society isn't exactly easy, is it? Gays are called names, beat up, denied equal rights by the government. Even in these fairly enlightened times.

So, if sexuality is a choice one can make, WHY IN THE WORLD, would ANYONE choose to be gay? Why not simply conform and choose to be attracted to the opposite sex? *presto* you're normal! Sweet!

    Um, err...

    -Arrian

    * - it does seem that some people will experiment with homosexuality or bisexuality and then end up leading a heterosexual life after that. As I've not done it, nor am I a psychologist, I'm not qualified to examine exactly what is going on there. But I do believe several articles have been posted in this thread that address the issue. If push comes to shove, I could ask the girl in the cube next to me, since she is/was bi and recently got married (and, given the laws of my wonderful state, that means she's with a man).

    • How ignorant can you be, Arrian? Everyone knows the pink mafia offers incredible benefits to its members. After you have sex with thirty men, they give you a free pair of rocket-powered roller skates. At the hundred mark, it's Judy Garland android servants for all.

At least, that's what they tell me. Lousy paranoid Starchild doesn't trust me...

      • Now, I personally don't think that they should be given the same name - so I am against 'gay marriage' . I have no problem with civil unions though (as I have said repeatedly) with the same tax breaks as marriages. Indeed, I would rather do away with state sanctioned marriages altogether, for hetro couples as well as homo, and have things like hospital visitation rights done in a different way. I don't see why married couples should get a tax break over couples who live together (often for many years) without having had a ceremony.
We're really not all that far apart on, actually, when we discuss our proposed solutions. It's how we arrive at those where we have differences.

I think this is incredibly bigoted.

            2. I object to the statement that gay marriage is the same thing as straight marriage. It is not. One is a commitment between two people of the opposite sex while the other is a commitment between two people of the same sex. These are not the same things.

Rogan Josh- you think something is incredibly bigoted- are you an expert on bigotry?

I think we should be told.

Q.2. You think that heterosexuality isn't the same as homosexuality?

Could I ask how long it took you to come to this startling conclusion?

I'm beginning to see what you mean- after all one involves partners of the same sex and one involves partners of the opposite sex.

Clearly their level of commitment can't be compared- Britney Spears whilst drunk, getting married, for less than a whole day, easily betters my devotion to my partner of twenty years, on the sole grounds of her heterosexuality. Obviously loving and caring for someone of the same gender and sexuality can't compare with this superb display of legal heterosexual loyalty, fidelity and love.

What do you have against "bisexual phases?" It's only fair to let him go back and forth, like the moon, right?

                  Hmmm... it makes you wonder...
It seems like some of the anti gay marriage folks are basing their argument on the fact that since homosexuality is a "choice"... they shouldn't be allowed to get married.

But does anybody here really think that if it was proved to them beyond any doubt that it wasn't choice, that they would change their position on the issue.

                  I DON'T THINK SO
