Yep. "Financially feasable" and "right thing to do" do seem to counter each other frequently.

We have blood on our hands since we did not follow through with our obligation.

Is that the reason Your president keeps saying "God Bless America" after every speach?

as for sending a large force to central africa, the French managed to send enough to set up Zone Turquoise, a region in which they prevented the Tutsi rebels from operating allowing extremists to escape into Zaire and continue the killing...

During 1993 the Hutu government began laying down the basics of the genoicde machine- pro-government papers spewed anti-Tutsi propaganda and Hutu militias were formed. then in Aril '94 the president dies in a plane crash (along with the president of Burundi). The very next day, Hutu militians begin closing off all the roads and the radio stattions begin coordinating the bands of killer who begin to hack away not only Tutsis (who are recorgnized if not by looks, also by their ID cards) but Hutu moderates who had not backed the Hutu extremists. The scale and form of the insuing genocide was horrific.

I love how the US now gets the blame for a bunch of Africans slaughtering each other. Is there any atrocity America isn't responsible for?

Well, Drake, we are responsible to the extent that we can act and fail to do so.

I agree. Doesn't make us responsible for the genocide, though.

that's crap... if the US went around playing policeman and attacking every nation that killed tons of people, we would all be conscripts in some massive military-industrial nation because we'd have to kick everyone's ass. Why is the US obligated to stop? And the UN is just a collection of ambassadors, it doesn't have people to enlist... those soldiers come from other countries.

It would be nice if we could have our cake and eat it to (pacifying the world without having to become a military nation)... but that isn't realistic. If it's in our power and doesn't cost too much, sure we should intervene. But I don't give a **** about a million Africans dying like that... not to be insensitive, but **** happens. If it directly threatens us, or doesnt' require a massive commitment and mobilization; then fine, let's do it. But I don't want this country to be some uber-world-police force.

800,000 people hacked to death and your still worried about cost effectiveness?

Tell me, how much are 800,000 people worth to you?

Romanticism is always appealing. It's far from the truth though. I'm saddened to say that today's governments follow Dinodoc's logic. Of course they're not as dumb as he is to say it out loud.

Which is in a way optimistic. Since governments have to actually conveince people that what they do is not for their personal gain (national or corporate) but for humanitarian reasons this means that people more readily accept humane reasons than profiteering/technocratic reasons. This is a good trait. Isn't of course all encompasing for all people but it applies to most.
