IBM is one of the most prominent supporters for sending jobs overseas, but even they are creating significant net positive jobs in the field in 2004.

I think I'll be looking for academic jobs next year. If that doesn't pan out I'm sure I can find something else interesting to do.

Not that I'd like to work.....

Undergraduate degrees aren't worth that much anyway. You should see some of the clowns that get them.

As GePap said, you are better off going to grad school for a couple of years. Grad school is the new "university". And if you're any good, you can get paid to do it.

Philosophers are employed in all sorts of fields. One of our old grads is the President of some huge Canadian bank (I forget which one). Mind you I'd rather shoot myself in the head than work in a bank.

A technical degree doesn't make you anything more than a glorified mechanic.

Any graduate degree is pretty good - it puts you in the top 5% of the population. And with the dumbing down of the university system it actually counts for something.

You are confusing a technical degree with a technical diploma, my dear.

And I don't see how a philosophy degree makes you any more than a glorified homeless bum...

Are you working on a Ph. D thesis or on a memoir, Agathon?

I winked in the first line of that post asking to meet him up for drinks.

The last thing I'd want to do is traumatize myself for life by meeting the '****.

A thesis. Should be finished soon. And then it's the fun of the academic job market. I'll probably have to take on a couple of contract jobs before I can get a tenure track job. The market isn't too bad right now as a lot of people are retiring and every department needs a Platonist.

Still, it's not a done deal. Our specialist program has a pretty good placement record. The last few graduates all have good jobs.

If I can't find a decent academic job, I'll probably try law. A law Degree/PhD seems like a reasonable resume to me. I'm only doing the PhD because I don't have to pay for it and it was a good chance to get out of NZ.

You mean like having an internship that waives your tuition and pays you a bi-weekly living wage?

+ a lump sum scholarship payment every year. It's not a bad deal - I was offered a heap more money in the States, but I liked the program here better.

Still, being paid to do what you really like is cool.

Certainly wasn't the NZ government that paid for that. I feel sorry for you working in Toronto, though.

You might make alot of money, but what's the point if you're going to be an uncultured, unsophisticated buffoon?
